The Department
The Public Works Department is responsible for the engineering, permitting, maintenance and operation of the City's infrastructure, including: streets, sidewalks, roadway medians, alleys, public parking lots, traffic signals, etc. The Department also manages maintenance and public service programs such as graffiti abatement, tree trimming, street sweeping, trash and recycling services, parks and street maintenance, and utilities and facilities maintenance. In addition, the Department Manages a comprehensive capital improvement program that provides roadway rehabilitation, signal coordination, trail construction, etc.
The Position
The City is seeking to fill multiple part-time Maintenance Aide positions for various shifts within the Public Works Streets and Parks Maintenance Divisions. Under general supervision, this position will assist in a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled maintenance duties, which may include, but is not limited to custodial service, landscape and park maintenance, street maintenance and graffiti abatement. Candidates must have the availability to work a flexible schedule.
Position Duties
The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed by employees in this classification.
- Perform street maintenance, including asphalt repair and concrete construction.
- Perform grounds maintenance, including irrigation system and facility repairs.
- Perform heavy physical labor.
- Remove trash and bulky items from alleyways, parkways, vacant lots, and City-owned property.
- Plant, water, weed, trim, seed, maintain shrubs, trees and flower beds.
- Remove weeds from parkways and alleyways.
- Operate equipment including compressor, pressure washing equipment and paint sprayers.
- May interact with the public and private contractors.
- Operate a variety of hand and power tools.
- Inspect facilities for cleanliness and re-stock supplies.
- Clean, sweep, mop, scrub, wax, polish floors and upholstery.
- Wash windows, walls, and other surfaces.
- Open, clean, stock and sanitize restrooms at all City parks.
- Clean and maintain horse trails.
- Pressure wash walkways and picnic areas.
- Assist with ball and sports maintenance.
- Pick up and empty trash cans and other waste materials from all City Parks.
- Pick up shopping carts, remove yard sale signs and posters from public right-of way.
- Assist with abatement of residential properties.
- Assist with City events including traffic control, delivering materials, set-up and clean-up of facilities used for City events.
- Provide general customer service to members of the public/patrons as instructed.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge of:
Tools and procedures necessary to perform basic duties in the areas of street, grounds maintenance and/or construction materials, tools and equipment; and techniques and safety practices of routine maintenance work.
- Lift up to 50 pounds;
- Read, understand, verbalize, and carry out both written and oral instructions;
- Perform heavy physical labor;
- Exercise personal control and represent the City in a professional manner;
- Work well with others and independently;
- Exercise judgment as needed without direct supervision;
- Bilingual in Spanish is desired.
- Applicants must submit a copy of their high school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent with application materials.
- One (1) year of full-time general maintenance work in facility, street, landscape, and park maintenance and construction.

- Must possess a valid California Class C Driver's License throughout the course of employment. City employees are registered with the Department of Motor Vehicles, Employee Pull Notice Program.
TESTING:
Candidates who pass all qualifying phases (minimum qualification review, written and/or oral examination) will advance to the hiring department who will have access to a pool of candidates to initiate the selection process. Employees in this position are regularly scheduled to work up to 28 hours per week and are not eligible for inclusion in the regular, permanent employment service of the City and do not receive medical benefits. Physical/Background Check
Upon conditional offer the selected candidate will be subject to background and reference checks and will be required to satisfactorily complete a post offer physical examination including a drug screen at the City's expense.
At-will ClassificationEmergency Disaster Worker
City employees are registered as an Emergency Disaster Worker and must take an oath. In the event of a declared emergency, City employees shall initially remain at work, or if recalled, shall report to work after completing critical personal and family emergency responsibilities.
