General Summary: The Elementary Chess Club Sponsor is responsible for organizing, leading, and instructing the Madison Elementary Chess Club in the fall. This role involves teaching fundamental chess concepts, organizing and supervising club meetings, and promoting good sportsmanship and critical thinking skills. The Elementary Chess Coach is responsible for organizing, leading, and instructing the Madison Elementary Chess Teams in the winter. Teams are made up from the strongest players of the club who are placed in 4-member teams that compete at local and state
tournaments.
Essential Functions:
- Instruction: Develop and deliver age-appropriate chess lessons for students in the club. Lessons should cover basic rules, opening principles, middle game tactics, and endgame strategies.
- Club Management: Organize and lead regular chess club meetings. Create a structured schedule for meetings, including time for instruction, free play, and organized play.
- Student Supervision: Supervise all students during chess club activities, ensuring a safe and respectful environment.
- Skill Development: Help students develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and sportsmanship skills through the game of chess.
- Communication: Maintain open communication with the school administration, parents, and students. Provide regular updates on club activities and student progress.
- Equipment Management: Oversee the school's chess equipment (boards, pieces, clocks) and ensure it is stored and maintained properly.
- Recruitment & Promotion: Assist in promoting the chess club to students and families to maintain strong enrollment.
Qualifications:
- Experience: Experience teaching or working with elementary-aged children is highly preferred.
- Knowledge: Basic understanding of chess rules, strategies, and tactics is helpful.
- Patience & Communication: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with young children. Patience, enthusiasm, and a positive attitude are essential.
- Background Check: Must be able to pass a background check as required by the school district.
Working Conditions:
- Schedule: The chess club typically meets once per week for 45 minutes. Club sponsors choose the time and day.
- Environment: Meetings are held in the music room at Madison Elementary School.
Compensation:
- This position is paid via a stipend, the amount of which will is determined by the number of sessions and activities.
