Job Summary

Please only apply to this posting if you have been directed to do so by SDCOE staff. This is the mandatory application for Mentors and Leads participating in the Teacher Induction program.

Required Documents

Local residency requirements: 

  • Must be a California Resident
  • Must be able to attend an in-person meeting during pre-employment processing (virtual option for out of county hires)

This position requires:

  • A clear California credential
  • Three or more years of full-time teaching (not including student teaching or Interning)
  • Mentor training is required for all Mentors who are new to the SDCOE Teacher Induction program. If a Mentor does not successfully complete the Online Mentor Initial Training course, they may not be a Mentor. This commitment ensures Teacher Candidates will receive the appropriate level of support.
  • A Mentor should not have a personal relationship with their Teacher Candidate (personal relationship = family, close friends, spouse)

Prior experience as a mentor or coach to other adults and working with or teaching students and/or adults in person, online, or in a hybrid setting is preferred.

    When completing the EDJOIN application:

    **Please make sure the email address used for your Edjoin account is one you have access to and check regularly; This will be where Preemployment information is sent.**

    After the EdJoin application is submitted, you will be emailed a list of additional requirements from SDCOE pre-employment.

    Requirements / Qualifications

    This limited-term position may be asked to:

    • Review the program handbook within first 30 days of entering the course
    • Participate and successfully complete the required Online Mentor Initial Training course, if a new mentor to the SDCOE Teacher Induction program.
    • Participate in SDCOE LMS training, meetings and other professional development activities 
    • Develop a trusting, meaningful, non-evaluative, supportive relationship with the candidate characterized by openness, sharing, confidentiality, and reflective conversations.
    • Make contact for no less than 1 hour each week of the school year providing support in meeting program requirements and needs of the candidate. This includes classroom observations, reflections, coaching, action research support, evidence completion, email, phone calls and any other contact needed to assist the candidate in successfully meeting requirements.
    • Provide support that builds on pre-service education and classroom experiences, and leads to effective and reflective professional practice. 
    • Assist and monitor the candidate in completing action research via the ILP, gathering evidence, and completing program requirements to be submitted through SDCOE's LMS within the timeline.
    • Complete surveys, logs and document reviews as required.
    • Notify the district lead if concerns arise about a teacher induction candidate. These concerns can include but are not limited to: missed meetings, non-communicative, missed deadlines and potential non-completion.

    It is important to note to become a substitute/limited-term employee, there may be a fingerprinting requirement that currently costs up to $77 (this is an up-front, out-of-pocket cost that must be paid in the form of a money order or cashier’s check). In addition, if you apply and are selected for a permanent position at any point there would be an additional $77 cost (currently) for fingerprinting as a permanent employee (taken out of your first regular paycheck).

    Please note that your completed online application must include all the required supplemental documentation. Incomplete applications will not be considered. All required California Credentials (if applicable, as issued by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing) must be confirmed prior to employment with SDCOE.
