The Landscape Inspector ensures compliance with City ordinances and accepted standards governing the installation and perpetual maintenance of required landscaping and irrigation systems. Work is performed independently and requires knowledge of applicable codes, rules and regulations and landscape methods, combined with skill and tact in explaining standards and reasons for compliance to builders, architects, contractors and the public.

Position Duties

Essential functions are the basic job duties that an employee must be able to perform, with or without reasonable accommodation.   • Performs inspections on properties that fall under City and County landscape ordinances
  • Inspects new landscapes and irrigation for proper installation, material quality and makes recommendations for conformance to minimum standards
  • Inspects existing landscapes and irrigations for maintenance deficiencies
  • Investigates complaints and violations, issues citations to violators who fail to correct deficiencies and makes court appearances as required
  • Present findings before the Special Master, Code Enforcement and other Board(s) as required
  • Inspects existing vehicular use areas to determine compliance with retro-active ordinance requirements; informs and gives instructions for compliance
  • Reviews landscape and irrigation system construction plans and blueprints
  • Electronically prepares reports and maintains inspection records of work performed and properly enters inspection data, including documents and images using provided hardware and software systems and equipment
  • Assists other departments in community projects such as Tree Give-a way's, Arbor Day's, City Work Days, etc.
  • Performs related work as required

Minimum Qualifications

  1. High school or vocational school or possess a G.E.D. certificate
  2. One (1) to three (3) years of experience in horticulture, pesticide application, vegetation management, turf management, and supervision of construction and landscape installations. Additional qualifying experience or completion of coursework at an accredited college or university in a job-related field, may substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required experience or education.
  3. Possess or be able to obtain a valid State of Florida driver's license within 30 days of hire.  
  4. If claiming Veteran's Preference, candidates must attach a DD214 Member 4 form, and the City of Fort Lauderdale's veteran's preference claim form(J-204) to the online application

  • International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) Certification 
As public servants, employees may be required to work immediately before, during, and/or after an emergency. All employees must be available and able to work assigned shifts as determined by their Department Heads.

PHYSICAL STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
 
The position involves medium physical demands, such as exerting up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 10 lbs. of force constantly to move objects.  Ability to lift, carry, climb, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, walk, push, pull, grasp, stand and access heights or areas where limited space is available.
