We are looking for someone to join Team Yuma as a Residential Building Inspector I working with the City of Yuma Community Development Department. The ideal candidate performs duties as they relate to construction projects, building products and inspection procedures for the Building Safety-Administration Division.
Under basic supervision, this job classification reviews construction plans and specifications, and inspects residential, small commercial, and construction projects for compliance with all building, safety and construction codes and regulations; represents the Community Development Department and assures that City codes and policies are followed and equitably enforced.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Inspects new construction projects, and repair and alteration projects for existing buildings; equitably enforces building and safety codes and regulations; assures that City codes and policies are followed; performs duties within scope of authority and training; duties may vary according to job assignment.
- Researches construction practices and building products, documents inspection procedures and findings, identifies compliance issues, and updates computer records and case reports.
- Aids clients on methods to meet code and ordinance requirements.
- Supports the relationship between the City and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and City staff; promotes the City goals and priorities, vision, values and the “Yuma Way”, and complies with all City policies and procedures.
- Maintains absolute confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education, Training and Experience Guidelines
High School Diploma or GED equivalent; AND three years construction or inspection experience; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Knowledge of:
- City policies and procedures.
- Federal, state and local building, construction, and safety codes, regulations and ordinances.
- Methods and techniques of inspecting buildings, structures and facilities for technical compliance.
- Occupational hazards and safety precautions in construction areas.
- Interpreting and applying building and safety standards, regulations, and City codes and policies.
- Applying technical knowledge of building trades work and using sound inspection methods to determine workmanship and materials quality and detect deviations from building and safety codes.
LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
A valid Arizona State Driver's License is required. International Code Council (ICC) Residential Building Inspector certification is required within one year of employment. Note: The City will pay for the first attempt/exam to obtain additional/voluntary Certifications after the required Certifications. Any additional attempt is the responsibility of the employee.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT
