About the Department

The Village of Tinley Park (population approx. 56,000) is a vibrant, progressive community located in the fast- growing Interstate 80 corridor in southwest suburban Chicago. We seek qualified applicants to fill two (2) newly added Maintenance Technician - 2nd Shift positions in the Facilities Division of the Public Works Department.  The Facilities Division is responsible for the maintenance of all Village buildings and for maintaining the Village's street lights program.  

Position Duties

The Maintenance Technician position performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled manual labor tasks such as general outdoor upkeep and maintenance, assisting in maintenance and construction projects, and stocking supplies at our various facilities.

The Maintenance Technician will also be cross-trained across all aspects of public works operations.  The Maintenance Technician will interact with and respond to members of the public as instructed or requested; operate a variety of equipment and vehicles individually or as part of a crew; and perform all duties as directed/instructed in conformance with all safety and security protocols.  In addition, will performs snow removal operations under the direction of the snow command team. The position reports directly to the Public Works Facilities Foreman.  

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED equivalent is required. Prior experience with construction and/or maintenance is preferred.   Working knowledge of light and heavy equipment or ability to acquire within one year of employment is required.   Valid Illinois State Driver’s license and the ability to obtain and maintain within six (6) months of employment a valid CDL Class B driver’s license with airbrake and tanker endorsements is required.  This position will require the ability to frequently lift up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move over 75 pounds.  Must be able to work in all types of weather conditions, use ladders, and work and/or move in restricted or confined spaces.  Ability to work snow and ice removal on a 24-hour on-call basis and work overtime hours as needed.

The ideal candidate will have a passion to learn about facilities operations, be skilled in working with hand tools, be mechanically inclined, able to operate a variety of equipment, and understand the public works department’s commitment to meeting the needs to the community. They will be a self-starter who can performs work as part of a crew or independently, can complete expected daily activities in accordance with pre-determined work schedules in a proper and safe manner, and can establish and maintain effective working relationships.  

Other Qualifications

This is a collectively bargained position under IUOE Local 150.  This position will be regularly scheduled for a minimum of forty (40) hours per week, Tuesday through Saturday, 1:30 pm – 10:00 pm, including ½ hour unpaid lunch and two (2) paid breaks.
