The Pharmacy Technician provides support to pharmacists and managers in all aspects of providing pharmacy services. It is the Technician that helps identify and improve pharmacy operations and serves as a leader in their area of expertise. The Technician participates in quality improvement initiatives as well as sales improvement initiatives within the department. The Technician has a history of qualitative consistency and productivity and works with minimal supervision and guidance. This position is a four day work week (10 hrs shifts).
Responsibilities
Under the direct supervision of a registered pharmacist, prepares medications according to prescription or physician order.
Includes the following activities:
1. Customer Service: Provide excellent customer service using SMILES wherever the patient encounter takes place (ie. In the patient’s room, over the phone, at the counter, in the halls, etc.). Problem solve issues with customers to achieve complete patient satisfaction.
2. Fill prescriptions that are ready to fill. Included with this is accurately inventory C-2 medications, accurately and efficiently fill and label prescription bottles, restock supplies and product to the shelf. Repair/Replace/Restock the Scriptpro robot to ensure the machine works to its fullest potential. Looks for ways to improve efficiency in the department and collaborates with pharmacy staff to improve overall performance.
3. Rings the register and completes the Ohio State Board requirements with each sale. Trouble shoot the register for any discrepancies and at the end of each business day as well as taking the previous day’s receipts to the accounting office. File the waiting prescriptions in the will call section so they are readily retrievable for patients when they come to pick up the prescriptions. Perform returns on the will call section so that no prescription is there for over 2 weeks.
4. Accurately and efficiently run new and refill prescriptions through the computer. Included with this is finding, entering, and billing the correct insurance for the patient. While billing for make sure the claim adjudicates to ensure maximum profitability for the department on every claim. Be able to teach and assist new and old employees in the proper way to fill a prescription and bill an insurance so discharge or wait time are not excessive.
5. File prescriptions and other pharmacy paperwork in an organized manner so they can be retrieved for audits. Helps with outdated and in date returns.
6. Administers immunizations according to pharmacy protocols
Uses technology in the department.
A. This includes the following:
1. Use Epic Willow to fill prescriptions as well as bill insurances.
2. Use Epic Hyperspace to find demographics as well as run and act on financial reports.
3. Troubleshoot Scriptpro, Emporos, and Willow as needed.
Meds to Beds: Be able to efficiently perform all activities associated with meds to beds and problem solve any issues and follow up on those with the appropriate individual (nurse, doctor, pharmacist, patient, etc)
Assists the Pharmacist in daily activities.
Answers telephone, receiving and relaying messages as needed.
Is one of the primary employees in the orientation, teaching and guidance of other pharmacy supportive personnel. Shows leadership.
Assist in projects.
Shows initiative and makes recommendations for quality improvement as well as sales growth and/or efficiency improvements.
Re-orders drugs and supplies when stock is low or predetermined stock level indicated. Rotates stock, checks expiration dates and cleans assigned area. Performs returns to the wholesaler.
Specialty Coverage: Be able to assist in oncology, inpatient, and other departments. This includes but is not limited to running inpatient technology such as the carousel and assisting with patient assistance enrollment in oncology. Demonstration of skills will be required as evidenced by at least 8 hours of cross coverage per month, unless waived by supervisor due to extenuating circumstances (i.e. staffing shortages, office closures).
Maintains a safe environment according to policy and procedure.
- Maintains the department in a neat, clean and orderly manner.
- Follows departmental and hospital safety policies and procedures.
- Maintains equipment according to procedure.
- Prepares continuous quality improvement records as requested.
As a representative of The Christ Hospital, promotes a positive image in all dealings with all other hospital employees and hospital guests.
Performs other duties as deemed necessary by the Director of Pharmacy, Assistant Director, Pharmacy Managers, and Pharmacists.
Potential for exposure to hazardous and toxic substances.
Qualifications
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

EDUCATION:
High School Diploma or GED
YEARS OF EXPERIENCE:
At least eight years (16,640 hours) of experience as a Retail Pharmacy Technician including at least five years at the Christ Hospital Pharmacy Department
REQUIRED SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:
Must meet all minimum qualifications for a Technician II:
Performance appraisals documenting the following:

LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS:
Ohio State Board of Pharmacy Technician Registration
PTCB/CPhT Certification
APhA or other approved Ohio Immunization Training
BLS/CPR Certified
