In this role, you will:
- Supervise and coordinate a maintenance crew in the installation and repair of roadway signs.
- Manage vegetation control through safe and effective herbicide application.
- Ensure roadway visibility and safety for the traveling public.
- Oversee scheduling, equipment management, and crew safety.
- Support additional roadway maintenance activities, including drainage, pavement repair, and traffic control.

Transportation Maintenance Crew Chief
Leads a crew of transportation maintenance technicians and equipment operators performing skilled transportation maintenance activities. Reports to a maintenance section supervisor and assists in administration of the maintenance section. Work requires responding to emergency notifications on an as-needed basis. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.
Essential Duties:
- Assists during accidents and emergency weather situations to sand bridges and roads, put up warning signs, and organize the response of crews.
- Assists in administration of the maintenance section.
- Estimates and gathers materials and equipment necessary to complete assignments.
- Inspects roads while en route to and from job site and reports problems to supervisors.
- Maintains records on materials and equipment used and employee time sheets.
- Operates light and heavy equipment.
- Oversees the work of designated maintenance inspectors and sign technicians.
- Performs some maintenance and repair on equipment and trains crew members on the use of equipment.
- Serves as a lead worker by scheduling daily work assignments; serving as a resource for complex questions and troubleshooting of problems; presenting operational updates to the supervisor; providing input on team members’ career conversations; and approving leave requests to ensure operational coverage.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general education.
Experience: 5 years of experience in roadway maintenance-related work. (Experience can be satisfied by full-time or prorated part-time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year-by-year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications
Licenses and Certifications:
- Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
- Must have a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) at time of application.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
- Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour

- Required to wear protective gear - respirator, hard hat, or other devices
- Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs. at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.
