Description
Purpose of the position: To manage all aspects of Habitat’s construction program in a way that utilizes volunteer labor and materials provides maximum community involvement and produces quality, energy efficient homes for low-income families in a safe and affordable manner.
Position Reports to: Executive Director
Salaried Position: Commensurate with experience
Minimal Job Requirements:
- Experience in construction work and supervision.
- College degree preferred and minimum of 5 years experience .
- Commitment to Habitat’s housing ministry & to the “Habitat way” of building houses.
- Able to manage multiple projects and set appropriate priorities.
- Ability to relate to people of different faiths, races and incomes.
- Ability to compassionately teach volunteers how to build.
- Desire to be a part of a cohesive team.
Requirements
Responsible for the following activities:
Construction Volunteer Management
- Provide construction supervision to volunteer crew leaders and construction volunteers.
- Identify, empower and train volunteer construction supervisors and crew leaders.
- Insure that all materials and tools are on site each workday for volunteers.
- Provide an overall plan for construction on a weekly basis.
- Assist Habitat families in becoming productively involved in the construction process.
- Provide a safe work environment that meets OSHA requirements.
Construction Preparation
- Provide the real estate committee with guidelines on site sizes and locations.
- Work with the real estate committee to identify potential building sites and rehabs.
- Work with the construction committee on sketches of site plans and floor plans.
- Apply for all permits.
- Read journals and other publications relevant to current building methods and materials.
Construction Procedure
- Create master construction schedule and timeline with assistance of const. committee.
- Take bids on all large material purchases each year.
- Contract with subs and insure their timely and accurate completion of jobs.
- Order inspections and insure that the houses are built to code.
- Use in-kind material and labor whenever possible.
- Provide timely dates for dedications and move-ins.
- Conduct a final walk-through with the family before move-in.
Management of Information
- Communicates weekly with Executive Director about construction issues and progress.
- Tracks construction costs and makes cost containment a priority.
- Attends real estate and construction committee meetings.
- Attend special events and conferences as appropriate.
- Provide the fundraising committee with a wish list of in-kind materials to solicit.
- Use pre-construction meetings to help house sponsors have a meaningful experience.
- Insure that invoices are correct and turned into the office in a timely manner.
- Works with the Executive Director, Treasurer and construction committee to set house prices annually and manage any grant programs on an ongoing basis
