JOB SUMMARY:
The Communications Specialist serves under the direction of the Director of Communications & Community Relations to support the development and execution of internal and external communications strategies for Midland Public Schools.

Director of Communications & Community Relations

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Manager Handbook - Manager, Level H

Full year / 260 days / Full time

Hours during summer and school breaks may vary, as determined by district administration

 

EVALUATION:
Annually until reaching maximum; refer to Manager Handbook

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, marketing, digital media, journalism, or a related field required.

Experience

  • 1-3 years of experience in a marketing or communications role preferred.

Demonstrated Skills

  • Experience in creative storytelling, including but not limited to social media management, video composition, media campaigns, and digital communications.

  • Strong writing, editing, and storytelling skills.

  • Proficiency in graphic design and visual storytelling.

  • Strong understanding of social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter/X, YouTube, and emerging channels) and content development strategies. 

  • Ability to analyze data to drive strategy and reporting. 

  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment. 

  • Excellent organizational and project management abilities. 

  • Experience producing and/or directing live video events, such as board meetings, preferred. 

  • Strong commitment to the vision of Midland Public Schools and the students, families, and community it serves.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:


Storytelling, Branding, and Content Creation

  • Develop and distribute marketing materials that promote and celebrate the staff, students, programs, and the school community at Midland Public Schools.
  • Write and produce engaging content for digital and print platforms, including scripts, speeches, newsletters, media articles, and news releases.
  • Design professional graphics for digital and print materials using tools such as Adobe Creative Suite and Canva.
  • Work with school and district staff to identify storytelling opportunities and effectively convey the culture and brand of each school or program.
  • Utilize AI tools to enhance communication workflows, content generation, and creative storytelling when appropriate.

Social Media & Website Management

  • Manage and schedule social media content across district platforms.

  •  Implement content and strategies to increase brand awareness and follower engagement.

  •  Provide creative direction to district and building staff to develop accurate, engaging content.

  •  Assist with updating and maintaining Midland Public Schools’ district website and train other staff members to use the website content management system.

Video Production & Editing

  • Serve as the district’s primary video production resource.

  •  Plan, film, edit, and produce high-quality video content for social media, marketing campaigns, and district initiatives.

  • Assist in the filming and production of live televised Board of Education meetings and other special meetings as assigned.

 

Data Collection & Strategic Reporting

  • Collect and analyze data on campaign performance, video engagement, and social media metrics.

  • Suggest additional platforms and tools for use by the Communications department based upon individual research and emerging trends in public education and beyond.

Event Support

  • Attend district events during and after school hours to collect content for storytelling initiatives.

  • Attend monthly Board of Education meetings and other special events/meetings as assigned to assist in video production, content development, and event execution.
