The Ann Arbor YMCA Child Development Center is hiring a Lead School Age teacher. We believe the values and skills learned early on are vital building blocks for quality of life and future success. That's why our child care programs are staffed with people who understand the cognitive, physical and social development of kids, the need children have to feel connected and supported in trying new things and the caring and reinforcement parents and families need to help each other.


POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Child Care Director and in accordance with the mission and purpose of the Ann Arbor YMCA, the Lead School Age Child Care Teacher is responsible for supervising after school participants and implementing the program designed for school age youth (Young 5’s-5th). The Lead School Age Teacher will work directly with the Child Care Director to develop programs that are in accordance with the YMCA core principles, HEPA (Healthy Eating and Physical Activity) standards, and Global Learning objectives. The Lead School Age Teacher will provide professional guidance to Assistant Teachers and will also be responsible for the daily upkeep of the School Age Child Care classroom and its contents. The Lead School Age Teacher will be responsible for planning all school days off, vacation breaks and snow days including processing registrations.   The Lead School Age Teacher will serve as an Assistant Teacher in the Early Childhood classrooms during the mornings (See job description for Assistant Teacher –Early Childhood for specifics).    


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Provide program supervision using positive guidance techniques.
  2. Develop and implement program activities that provide youth with experiences in the developmental areas of physical, social, emotional and social growth.
  3. Provide transportation for program participants from their home schools to the YMCA.
  4. Serve as an Early Childhood Assistant Teacher during the mornings. (See “Assistant Teacher” - Early Childhood for more details.) 
  5. Prepare the classroom environment to enhance each participant’s learning through active exploration and interaction with adults, peers and materials through learning centers e.g. science, math, games/puzzles books, music, art appreciation, etc. 
  6. Maintain program and classroom space per the Department of Human Services licensing requirements.
  7. Maintain appropriate adult/child licensing ratios.
  8. Possess working knowledge of child abuse and neglect laws and proper reporting procedures.
  9. Plan all field trips and programming for “School Days Off”, snow days and week-long breaks.
  10. Communicate, maintain and model expectations to all youth.
  11. Maintain individual records for all participants in a current and up to date status.
  12. Promote partnerships with families and communicate regularly via daily greeting and classroom publications.

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • A minimum of two years experience working with school age children.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, flexibility and an ability to work in a team setting are required.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a chauffeur’s license is required.
  • Must have physical examination, including satisfactory TB test, six months prior to beginning work or 30 days after. 
  • Candidate must have completed and received six course credits in a child-related field.
  • Candidate must complete 16 hours of professional development in a calendar year.
  • An interest and ability in developing and implementing creative programming with the goal of teaching the YMCA core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.
  • A patient, high energy and goal oriented attitude is essential.
  • Ability to be responsive to the needs, wants and interests of both the parents and youth enrolled in the School Age Child Care programs and Early Childhood programs.
  • Multi-lingual ability is preferred.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  1. Ability to walk, stand, and sit (including on the floor) for long periods of time.
  2. Must be able to assist an average size child up to 50 pounds.
  3. Must be able to lift and carry food and supplies weighing up to 20 pounds.
  4. Ability to stand or sit while maintaining alertness for several hours at a time.
  5. Position may require bending, leaning, kneeling, and walking.
  6. Ability to speak concisely and effectively communicate.
  7. Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical situations and physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency
  8. Ability to view/enter data for long periods of time.

Hours of program: 9-6 pm; M-F
