Digitization Technician-Full Time Temporary

The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County is seeking a Digitization Technician for our Research & Collections department. The Digitization Technician works as part of a team of digitizers for the grant-funded project “DigIn: Digitizing Marine Invertebrate Collections”, overseeing the digitization process from jar to database. NHMLA has committed to digitizing 320,000 specimen lots across multiple marine sections.
Responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to:
Participates in a team of digitizers accomplishing grant-funded project “DigIn: Digitizing Marine Invertebrate Collections”, supporting the digitization process from jar to database. Works with and supports a diverse team of staff, and student digitizers. Ensures appropriate handling of specimens and maintains high standards for overall collection care.
Responsible for digitizing and managing the museum’s type collections, collaborating with experienced staff to ensure accurate digitization and proper curation.
Implements workflows to ensure accuracy and consistency across team members. Helps troubleshoot, problem-solve, and coordinate with collections staff to update workflows and processes as needed.
Helps with data quality control and quality control procedure refinement.
Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Curator of the Marine Biodiversity Center, dependent on project needs.
Other duties as assigned by the Manager and as department needs.
This position has the following requirements:
Experience and education equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in a related field with 2 years experience working with natural history collections and data.
Working knowledge of principles of databases. Working knowledge of software and data management tools typically used in natural history collections
Working knowledge of biological taxonomy.
Working knowledge of the organization of natural history collections and typical storage conditions for specimens.
Communication: Demonstrated excellence in oral and written communication.
Writing Skills: Ability to write clear technical procedures and professional correspondence.
Presentation Skills: Ability to effectively present technical information to and respond to questions from colleagues.

The starting hourly rate for this position is $23.00 per hour with experience plus excellent benefits. This is a Full-Time Temporary position with an anticipated assignment end date of September 7, 2026.
