About the Department
Responsible for maritime maintenance in connection with the operation of passenger and vehicle ferries and docks under the general supervision of the Maintenance Superintendent of Ketchikan International Airport.
Shift work, after hours and weekend work may be required.
Position Duties
- Ensure vessels are current with required U.S. Coast Guard examinations and are operating in full compliance with all applicable federal regulations regarding vessel safety equipment.
- Oversee all preventative and general maintenance of the airport ferry fleet.
- Oversee all preventive maintenance of the airport ferry fleet. Maintain schedules and documentation of all work accomplished on the vessels. Order materials with the guidance of the Maintenance Superintendent and act as the airport Port Engineer when vessels are in yard maintenance periods.
- Perform maintenance and operate ferry transfer bridges. Maintain and document work on other airport docks used by ferries for docking or moorage.
- Perform routine cleaning, painting, and other vessel maintenance work as assigned, including but not limited to decks, cabins, and safety equipment.
- Maintain courteous and cooperative relationships with the ferry captains, deck hands, Coast Guard personnel and their representatives.
- Perform relief Deck Hand duties as directed. Provide first aid and water rescue as needed.
- Provide instruction to other employees of this or a similar job classification in all aspects of procedure and technique relating to the duties required by this job description unless such instruction requires a specialized certification which the employee doing the training does not have.
- Perform and assist in other related duties as directed by the Maintenance Superintendent.
Minimum Qualifications
Agility and physical strength. Ability to exercise courtesy and tact in contacts with other crew members, the general public, and other agencies. Knowledge of procedures, practices and safety regulations pertaining to ferryboat operations and maintenance. Ability to administer first aid treatment as required. Ability to operate the gears of ferryboats and life-saving devices. Ability to understand and carry out oral commands and written instructions involving terms commonly used in vessel communication. Ability to perform skilled maintenance and repairs on a vessel. Ability to swim and carry out life-saving actions during emergencies. Willingness to perform various job-related tasks as situations require, a strong sense of teamwork, and the ability to work cooperatively with others.
Other Qualifications
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Valid State of Alaska Driver License with an acceptable driving record
- High school diploma.
- Five (5) years of relevant marine experience, servicing marine machinery such as propulsion systems, air systems and hydraulics. Three years total experience handling lines, tackle and mooring equipment.
