The San Mateo County Registration & Elections Division is seeking full-time, seasonal extra-help IT Assistant – Office Specialists to assist in the upcoming November 4, 2025, Special Election. This is an excellent nonpartisan opportunity to be involved in the election process!
  
The Elections Division is an exciting, fast-paced environment, especially as elections approach.  IT Assistants will be responsible for a variety of tech projects and tasks throughout the election period.  IT Assistants will work on-site at the Registration & Elections Division at 40 Tower Road in San Mateo, CA, and throughout the county at the various Vote Centers.  


The IT Assistant is classified as an Office Specialist. The starting hourly wage for this position is $30.10.
 
This is an extra-help, at-will assignment, paid on an hourly basis. Extra-help hours are dependent on the business needs of the department and therefore work hours may vary from week to week. Extra help employees shall not exceed 1,040 hours of work per fiscal year. Some extra help positions are eligible for benefits under the Affordable Care Act. Extra help employees are not guaranteed permanent status at the end of the assignment.

Position Duties

Examples of projects and tasks are: 

  • Basic PC /printer /monitor troubleshooting
  • Facility Network Connectivity
  • Schedule site visits at fifteen (15) Vote Center sites with county network engineers
  • Bring networking hardware to site
  • Record data into excel spreadsheets from tests conducted by the network engineers
  • Vote Center Tech Support
  • Office Tech Support
  • Function test equipment used at Vote Centers (iPads, wireless printers, WIFI printers, etc.)
  • Visiting Vote Centers and report connection issues
  • Simple troubleshooting before escalating to network engineers 
  • Troubleshooting equipment issues in the field

Minimum Qualifications

Successful candidates for the IT Assistant positions will have previous experience providing basic PC /tech troubleshooting support.
 

Ideal Candidates for the IT Assistant positions will have the following:

 

Technical Skills:

  • Knowledge of and use of iPads and iPhones
  • Basic understanding of Wi-Fi networking 
  • Hardware setup 
  • Software installation
  • Troubleshoot issues with system configurations 

 

Work Skills:

  • Well-organized /detail oriented
  • Ability to explain issues clearly and follow instructions to meet deadlines
  • Excellent communication skills (email /verbal) 
  • Customer service


Office hours are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. Some positions may require working overtime, including long hours, weekends, evenings, and holidays. Any authorized time worked more than 40 hours in the workweek shall be considered overtime and shall be compensable at the rate of one and one-half (1-1/2) times the overtime worked. The selected individuals must be available for the entire employment period until the completion of their assignment.
