Under the supervision of the principal, the substitute teacher will be responsible for maintaining a positive learning environment and ensuring that students' education continues in the absence of the regular classroom teacher. This position requires flexibility, effective classroom management skills, and the ability to follow lesson plans.
Key Responsibilities:
Classroom Management: Maintain a respectful, well-organized, and safe classroom environment for students.
Instruction: Deliver pre-prepared lesson plans to students in accordance with the school's curriculum. Ensure that students remain engaged and participate in the lesson.
Supervision: Oversee students during non-instructional periods, including recess and lunch, if necessary.
Communication: Provide clear instructions to students and communicate effectively with school staff and administration regarding student progress or concerns.
Classroom Materials: Ensure that all classroom materials are used appropriately and return materials to their proper place at the end of the day.
Behavior Management: Enforce classroom rules and resolve issues in a positive and productive manner. Report any behavioral or academic issues to the appropriate school staff.
Record Keeping: Complete attendance and any other required reports.

California Requirements:
Substitute Teacher Permit: In California, substitute teachers must hold a 30-Day Substitute Teaching Permit or a Short-Term Staff Permit. These permits require a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.
Clearance: A valid California teaching credential or substitute permit is required. All substitute teachers must undergo a fingerprint background check as part of the application process.
TB Clearance: Proof of a negative TB test (or clearance) within the past 60 days is required before starting employment.
Child Abuse Index Check: Submission of a Child Abuse Index Check to the California Department of Justice (DOJ) may be required.
Basic Skills Test: If the candidate does not hold a valid teaching credential, they must pass the California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST) or an equivalent exam.
Experience: Previous experience working with children or in an educational setting is a plus.
Skills: Strong communication and interpersonal skills; ability to manage classrooms effectively; familiarity with basic classroom technology and teaching tools.
Other Requirements: Ability to follow instructions and adapt to various teaching environments; patience and flexibility; dependable and punctual.
