SUMMARY
The Grain Merchandiser role involves buying, selling, and optimizing grain inventory to meet market demands and maximize profitability for the Cooperative.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

- Purchases and sells commodities using available market data, market knowledge and expertise to attain the most cost-effective results.
- Develops merchandising strategies unique to our region and markets that are compliant with company risk requirements with an emphasis on profitability and market share.
- Develops expertise in the markets that influence business which may include, rail, ethanol, processor, and other truck markets.
- Maintains an awareness of market conditions and competition in the region.
- Maintains a sound understanding of rail and truck transportation for commodity shipment. Keeps abreast of transportation rates and makes the most effective decisions involving procurement and logistics.
- Adheres to department control processes and reporting requirements.
- Develops and maintains communication and a strong working relationship with other departments and employees to assure the company functions as a coordinated group.
- Checks accounting for accuracy and follow through on contracts and settlements, making sure that underfills and overfills are settled in a timely manner.
- Performs daily hedging activities.
- Researches and conducts market analysis of all commodities to support hedging and trading decisions which maximizes profit potential while effectively managing risk of our customer base in commercial and production agriculture.
- Completes daily position reports (DPR) and hedging & marketing the grain position in the absence of the Division Manager or other merchants.
- Enhances the value proposition our Co-op delivers to customers by successfully executing market risk management tools and services for our patrons.
- Collaborates across the organization to exchange information. (i.e. grain merchandisers, grain buyers, the hedge desk, originators, salespeople, office staff and accounting)
- Maintains and promotes a strong safety culture by following all safety policies, procedures and regulations. Identifies and communicates workplace hazards and s or seeks assistance in correcting unsafe actions or conditions.
- Provides excellent customer service by promoting coop, managing difficult or emotional situations; responds promptly to customer needs, resolves questions, complaints, and concerns immediately and meets commitments.
- Effectively communicates by verbal and written means with customers, employees, and management. Maintains a positive attitude that promotes teamwork within the cooperative.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or general education degree (GED); three to five years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Previous experience with traded commodities, corn specifically preferred. Willing to seek out and attend additional continuing education, seminars, classes or other job-related education requirements or opportunities.
CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, REGISTRATION
Current valid driver’s license required.

This position is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts, toxic or caustic chemicals, outside weather conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, risk of electrical shock, and explosives. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places and/or confined spaces. The noise level in the work environment in some areas may, from time to time, exceed 85 db.
