Under general supervision, to operate and monitor computer systems and peripheral equipment; and to perform related work as required. 

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS: Incumbents in the class of Computer Operator operate and maintain personal computers.

EXAMINATION PROCESS:  Based upon screening of the City application, résumé, and responses to supplemental questions, applicants whose qualifications best meet the requirements of the position will be invited to the examination process.  This process may include but is not limited to, panel interview, which consists of an evaluation of some of the essential knowledge, skills, abilities, and job-related experience listed below. Those candidates who pass the examination process are placed on an eligibility list from which the final selection will be made.

SELECTION PROCESS:  As authorized by City policy, applicants being considered for hire in this position are subject to fingerprinting for purposes of investigating criminal history background, as part of the employment screening process.  Appointment is subject to successful completion of a pre-employment medical examination (based upon job-related physical standards) by a City-designated physician.

Failure in any one part of the examination or selection processes will disqualify a candidate from further consideration.

Position Duties


The following duties are typical of this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the duties and/or may be required to perform specific additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.

  • Operates, controls and monitors computers and peripheral equipment
  • Assists in software and hardware identification and installation
  • Responsible for handling all of the operational jobs required by various departments
  • Sets up, maintains nightly backups for the City network and forms for the high-speed printers
  • Assists staff in solving problems with programs and equipment
  • Performs minor maintenance of equipment
  • Handles tagging and logging of equipment being liquidated
  • Assists in maintaining a logbook of system problems
  • Under supervision, will debug and make minor changes to small programs
  • Maintain various databases of information pertaining to the City network and client PC's
  • Maintains system security
  • Performs data entry and data control work, as assigned
  • Requisitions supplies and parts
  • Performs related work as required

Minimum Qualifications

 
Education/Experience: Any combination of training, education and experience which demonstrates an ability to perform the duties of the position. The typical qualifying entrance background is completion of formal training in the operation of computer equipment or recent responsible experience in the operation of a small to medium computer system.
 
Knowledge of: Principles of the operation and maintenance of personal computer systems and related peripheral equipment; principles of Operating Systems, Databases, and general Network operation; and simple record keeping.
 
Ability to: Operate a computer and peripheral equipment; operate several pieces of data processing equipment simultaneously; resolve routine computer processing problems independently; read, interpret and follow computer-processing instructions; perform minor maintenance on computers and related equipment; maintain simple records; understand and carry out oral and written instructions; provide assistance to City users through telephone support and hands-on support; and establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS: Work is performed indoors.  Constantly uses a computer.  Frequently works with others. Occasionally works alone, drives motorized equipment/vehicles.  Incumbents must work under adverse conditions such as a cold, drafty, noisy, environment and confined spaces; work a varying shift.
