SUMMARY:
The position of Corporate Controller is a senior-level manager responsible for overseeing and managing the accounting and financial functions of the Company and ensuring accurate financial results. The Corporate Controller manages the daily accounting functions and accounting staff; establishes and maintains the general ledgers for the Company’s entities; manages the month end close process to support timely and accurate reporting in compliance with GAAP and SEC requirements; takes the lead on researching and documenting accounting policy elections, as applicable to First Bancorp; and ensures that applicable financial controls are developed, implemented, documented and adhered to. The Corporate Controller interacts with other Finance team members, including the Operational Controller and Director of Financial Reporting and is a key liaison with auditors and other outside parties. May perform managerial duties in the absence of the Chief Accounting Officer. The role is expected to provide leadership, training and guidance to less experienced staff members and provide guidance to other finance personnel in relation to GAAP and processes and controls.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Provides supervision and support to designated areas of the department and other areas of responsibility where service or assistance is needed; oversees activities of accounting department personnel.
- Supervises the following accounting functions, including but not limited to:
- General Ledger
- Month end close process for Bank, holding company and subsidiaries
- LOB specialized accounting (mortgage, SBA)
- Investment accounting
- Accruals/prepaids review and analysis
- HR and Benefits related accounting
- Development, implementation and documentation of controls and procedures to maintain proper financial records.
- Ensures audit compliance and procedure quality control are maintained for the department and Bank; reviews, recommends and initiates corrective actions; and ensures department complies with established Bank policies, procedures and state and federal regulations.
- Supports CAO in technical accounting research and determination of appropriate accounting treatment for transactions and activity.
- Serves as liaison to the external and internal auditors for audit requests and inquiries; works closely with the Director of Financial Reporting on audit requests.
- Develops, documents, tests and implements policies and procedures pertaining to the maintenance of accurate accounting records and report preparation.
- Participates in various internal committees as assigned by senior management.
- Responds to inquiries or refers inquiries to the appropriate department or person, and exhibiting the necessary follow through with customers and/or staff involved.
- Assists market leaders, branch personnel, and line of business or other departments in resolving accounting inquiries and providing financial-related support.
- Contributes to the overall profitability of the department and Bank; implements cost controls and monitors expenses to ensure compliance with budget.
- Consistently applies sound decision-making techniques pertaining to inquiries, approvals, requests as they apply to existing policies and procedures, and other required decisions.
- Responsible for staff development and growth through training and communication as well as delegation ensuring a highly cross-trained staff.
- Performs personnel actions including performance appraisals, disciplinary actions, and interviewing candidates for employment; effective delegation of assignments, developing work schedules and providing necessary training.
- Completes annual compliance courses.
- Adheres specifically to all corporate policies and procedures. Also adheres to Federal and State regulations and laws, including, the Bank Secrecy Act, the Anti-Money Laundering Act and applicable Securities and Exchange Commission regulations.

- Perform other duties as required.
GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge & Experience: These specifications are general guidelines based on the minimum experience normally considered essential to the satisfactory performance of this position. Individual abilities may result in some deviation from these guidelines.
- Bachelor’s degree in business, accounting, finance, or related field or equivalent work experience.
- Educational experience, through in-house training sessions, formal school or financial industry related curriculum, should be business, accounting or financial industry related.
- Advanced knowledge of bank operations, products and services; related SEC, state and federal laws and regulations, and other bank operational policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of bank-related accounting policies and research/documentation.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills – ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Advanced skills in computer operation; word processing, spreadsheet and specialty software programs.
- Exceptional verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to apply common sense to carry out instructions and instruct personnel.
- A Certified Public Accounting certification is strongly preferred.
- 10+ years of experience in bank accounting, bank auditing, public accounting, or similar experience is required.
Physical Demands/Work Environment: Vision, hearing, speech, dexterity, visual concentration. A valid driver’s license is required. Must have the ability to stand, walk, sit and use hands and fingers. Must have the ability to work the hours and days required to complete the essential functions of the position, as scheduled. The environment is a professional office with standard office equipment.
