About the Department

The Albany's Police Department is seeking a Part-time Parking Enforcement & Traffic Control Technician to join our team!

Part time working up to 24 hours per week.

Hourly wage starting at $28.03 per hour.

Under the direction of a police supervisor, the Parking Enforcement & Traffic Control Technician is responsible for a variety of routine paraprofessional traffic enforcement and control duties, related primarily to the enforcement of municipal parking laws and regulations.

Successful performance of the work requires the frequent use of tact, discretion, and independent judgment, knowledge of departmental and City activities, and extensive public contact.

  • Patrol City streets (both walking and motorized patrol) and issue citations for parking violations such as illegal parking in restricted zones and parking in front of driveways or fire hydrants.
  • Chalk tires and return to verify violation, and issue overtime citations.
  • Issue citations using hand-held computers and issue handwritten citations.
  • Document violations and prepare reports related to enforcement of 72-hour parking restrictions; facilitate towing and storage of vehicles for violations of parking regulations, ordinances, and laws.
  • Maintain specialized parking enforcement vehicles in clean, serviceable condition.
  • Report and respond to traffic and emergency situations; respond to requests for assistance with traffic control problems; direct traffic; maintain a traffic control post.
  • Inform the public of regulations and procedures related to parking enforcement.
  • Testify in administrative hearings and court cases related to parking violations and citations.
  • Use a two-way radio to communicate with public safety dispatchers to arrange for towing and call for emergency assistance.
  • Operate a department vehicle and respond to service calls as required.
  • Report unusual occurrences or problems of an urgent nature to supervisor and act in accordance with instructions received.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: 
Any combination of education, training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills and abilities would be:
  •  Possession of a high school diploma or GED
  • Must possess and maintain a valid California Driver License with a clean driving record.
  • At least one year’s work experience performing customer service or public contact duties.

Other Requirements:
  • Previous parking enforcement experience (highly desirable).
  • Typical work shifts occur 3 days per week (Monday-Saturday) with shifts occurring between 8:00 am and 6:00 pm.  Schedule can be modified for operational needs for occasional evenings, nights, holidays and Sundays.
  • Criminal records review, DMV history assessment, psychological interview, and medical examination.

Background Investigation* 
A thorough investigation of personal history, including but not limited to work history, education, military, arrest record, etc., will be conducted on candidates certified to the Police Department.  During the background investigation, candidates must also successfully complete a required DMV history assessment.  

Conditional Job Offer** 
Candidates may be provided with a conditional job offer. After receiving a conditional offer of employment, the candidate will complete a psychological examination and medical examination (including drug and alcohol screening) prior to appointment.
