The City of Benicia is looking for reliable, flexible, and customer-service-oriented individuals to join our team as Facility Attendants. This temporary, part-time position plays a key role in supporting the use of City facilities by the public and local organizations.

Facility Attendants supervise the use of City facilities, including the Clock Tower, Senior Center, Community Center, City Gym, and outdoor parks. Responsibilities include opening and closing facilities, setting up and breaking down equipment, monitoring events and rentals, and ensuring rules and safety guidelines are followed. 

Attendants also assist with drop-in sports programs, collect participant fees, and may be required to keep score for games. For outdoor rentals and events, Facility Attendants check in picnic users and support the Parks Department with light maintenance, sometimes requiring the use of a City of Benicia vehicle.

Attendants must be able to follow written and oral instructions, work independently, and provide excellent customer service. Work hours vary depending on facility reservations, typically ranging from 4 to 25 hours per week, with most shifts occurring evenings and weekends; holidays may be required. 



Position Duties

The Facility Attendant supervises the use of City facilities, set up City facilities and equipment, maintain facilities and equipment and follow written and oral instructions. This is a temporary Part-time position. The successful candidate would be required to work variable hours and days, depending on the date and times that City facilities are reserved by the public and local organizational groups. Hours can vary from 0 to 25 hours per week. Most hours would be in the evening or weekends.

Minimum Qualifications

Duties may include but are not limited to the following: 

  • Providing assistance and information to building users.
  • Meeting and greeting facility users.
  • Performing facility check-in and/or checkout as needed.
  • Informing facility users of City policies and procedures pertaining to their use, and insuring that users are in compliance.
  • Perform minor clean up or repairs as needed or necessary.
  • Perform inspections of facilities to insure safety and cleanliness.
  • Insure facility users adhere to and/or fulfill facility use requirements.
  • Set up and break down City equipment.
  • Maintain professional, courteous behavior toward co-workers, members of the public and all other contacted in the course of work.
  • Resolve customer questions and complaints.
  • Drive vehicle to work sites.
  • Perform related duties as assigned by supervisor in area of assignment.

Knowledge and Abilities:  
  • Ability to coordinate and direct the activities and events held at recreational facilities and other City facilities.
  • identify problems in event or facility planning and recommend solutions.
  • Operate a variety of sound, lighting and electronic equipment, including alarm systems.
  • Provide information to the general public, special event promoters and producers, and service personnel; and provide general direction regarding operation of all City facilities, buildings, parks and grounds. 
  • Knowledge of janitorial and light maintenance practices, methods, and procedures.
  • Adequate skill in operation of motor vehicles.  
  • Ability to establish and maintain courteous, effective public relations and to work harmoniously and effectively alone or with others; must be personable and able to deal effectively and courteously with the public.
  • Knowledge of safety practices and procedures used in janitorial and light maintenance work.  
  • Ability to understand oral and written instructions and to maintain routine logs, time cards, and forms. 
  • Able to read and understand cleaning and set-up schedules. 
  • Spanish speaking ability desirable. 
  • Must be available to work nights/weekends/holidays as needed. 

Minimum Qualifications

Education
  • Education equivalent to graduation from high school.  

Experience
  • Equivalent to one year of paid or volunteer work in an entry-level position in customer service, recreation or community service program

  • The following experience is desirable: Working with the public and/or Coordinating Special Events or recreation activities

Licenses and/or Special Requirements
  • Must be a minimum of 18 years of age. 
  • Possession of a current Class C California driver's license.  


Working Conditions:
All work activities are performed in or outside a public facility. Must be able to see and hear, read and write legibly, sit and stand for long periods of time; possess an audible voice for communication; and be able to lift objects up to 40 pounds and move items such as tables, chairs and room partitions.

All part-time positions are "at will" and therefore continuation of employment is subject to availability of funding, determination of need for services and method to provide services, at sole discretion of the City. Part-time employees are not eligible for fringe benefits provided to full-time employees of the City.
