SMG seeks a Senior Safety Advisor – Construction in North Carolina – Day Shift 

This will be a 4-month project. This person will serve as the Owner’s Rep to provide professional oversight and consultation on health, safety, and environmental matters during renovation and construction activities within the manufacturing facility. The Advisor will act as an extension of the Owner’s project management team, ensuring that all contractors and subcontractors adhere to established safety standards, OSHA regulations, and site-specific requirements. The primary objective of this role is to reduce risk, improve safety performance, and maintain compliance throughout all phases of the project while fostering a strong culture of safety among all stakeholders.  


Overview of Job Responsibilities

  • Planning and Pre-Construction Support Participate in project planning sessions to review safety risks, contractor safety programs, and job hazard analyses (JHAs)
  • Support the development and review of pre-task plans, method statements, and safety work plans for high-risk activities. 
  • Verify contractor site-specific safety programs (SSSPs) are complete, compliant, and aligned with owner expectations. Identify potential conflicts with ongoing manufacturing operations and recommend mitigation strategies. 
  • Must be able to create reports, run safety metrics, and use other software programs
  • Meetings and Communication Attend Owner/Contractor/Construction Management coordination meetings to represent the Owner’s safety interests. 
  • Participate in weekly project progress meetings to provide safety updates, observations, and recommendations. Communicate identified hazards, trends, and best practices to project stakeholders in a clear and actionable manner. 
  • Facilitate safety-related discussions between the Owner and contractors when needed
  • Verify compliance with safety policies and procedures as required by law, the Owner, and contractors
  • Jobsite Safety Observations Perform routine and unannounced safety walks across active construction and renovation areas. 
  • Document safety observations, both positive and corrective, using standardized reporting tools. Conduct joint safety walks with contractors and construction management to reinforce accountability.
  • Verify compliance with OSHA regulations, owner’s safety standards, and contractor-specific safety programs. 
  • Reporting and Documentation Deliver weekly safety reports summarizing inspections, observations, incidents, and corrective actions. Maintain logs of contractor compliance, safety meetings attended, and safety program reviews. Provide executive-level summaries highlighting progress, risk areas, and recommendations
  • General Advisory Role Act as a resource to both Owner and contractors on best practices in construction and industrial safety. Provide coaching and mentoring to contractor safety representatives and supervisors. Support continuous improvement by sharing industry standards, lessons learned, and leading practices. Deliverables: Weekly site safety reports with key findings and recommendations Attendance and participation records for meetings and safety walks 

Requirements


  • Ten plus years of construction safety experience
  • OSHA 30-Hour Construction
  • Previous experience working with an Owner or large GC 
  • Prefer OSHA 510/500
  • BSCP preferred – CSP, CHST, OHST
  • A degree in safety or related fields is preferred
  • First-aid/CPR certification from the American Red Cross or the American Heart Association
