About the Department

The Engineer 3 – System Services position performs engineering level technical and procedural duties for System Services Division. Provide guidance, track and report on regulatory activities within the System Services Division. Plan, organize, administer and track new initiatives and projects within the division. Responsible for Water/Sewer construction activities – planned and emergency response and/or Water Quality and Water/Sewer Maintenance – planned and emergency response. General Engineering support within System Services.


Employees at Metro Water Services (MWS) work around the clock to supply, treat, manage, and protect our water resources in a sustainable manner for the benefit of all who live, work, and play in our community.  Our dedicated, diverse workforce provides high quality drinking water and the best in wastewater treatment, storm water management, and waste collection services for our customers in the Nashville-Davidson County area. Our employees work together to service more than 210,000 water and 216,000 sewer accounts along with over 150,000 curbside waste collection customers. Position Duties

  • Maintains full managerial responsibility for the Water/Sewer construction or Water/Sewer maintenance sections.
  • Supervises and leads employees, assigning work duties, providing performance evaluations, coaching/counseling, and mentoring.
  • Responsible for Water/Sewer construction activities – planned and emergency response and/or Water Quality and Water/Sewer Maintenance – planned and emergency response. 
  • Determine appropriate workloads, staffing levels and schedules, providing ongoing support.
  • Organize, manage, supervise, prioritize, plan, and direct water and sewer construction and/or water quality, water and sewer maintenance, operations related to planning, repairing, and installing linear assets and associated appurtenances. 
  • Participates in development of the capital improvements budget for linear water projects. 
  • Serves as a Department technical expert, supporting other divisions in water distribution and wastewater collection systems issues. 
  • Coordinates with other sections and divisions as necessary regarding water main breaks/repairs, sewer main breaks/repairs and/or water quality, water and sewer maintenance.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an accredited college or university and eight (8) years of progressively responsible post degree engineering experience, including four (4) years as a licensed Professional Engineer and two (2) years of lead or supervisory experience.
OR
Professional Engineering License and eight (8) years of engineering experience, including two (2) years as a professional engineer and two (2) years of lead or supervisory experience.


NOTE: Employees in supervisory positions must complete the in-service supervisory training prior to completion of the work test.


LICENSES REQUIRED
Valid Driver License
Professional Engineering License*


*A Professional Engineering License from any state is required to apply for this position; however, the Tennessee Professional Engineering License must be obtained prior to completion of the probationary period.

Failure to obtain the Tennessee Professional Engineering License will terminate employment.

Other Qualifications

  • Experience supervising employees of a water/wastewater plant
  • Experience working on complex water and sewer projects
  • An understanding of engineering principles including the review, design, and construction of water and sewer infrastructure
