Director of Technology

 

 

JOB SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Chief Personnel Officer, provides leadership in all areas of technology and information systems. The Director is responsible for undertaking broad, multi-level, and complex assignments and projects that support the technological and information needs of the District. The Director ensures that technology and information efforts are consistent with delivering effective quality educational and administrative services for students and staff. Additionally, the Director will provide regular technology training opportunities for all District staff and support ongoing analysis and coordination of District technical needs in instruction, Business and Human Resources.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Identify potential funding sources to enhance the District Technology Plan; 
  • Coordinate and supervise the implementation of the District’s technology plan, to include installation and maintenance of the infrastructure and needed equipment; 
  • Supervise the implementation and utilization of the internet, network administration, and web page; 
    • Pursue advantageous partnerships both public and private; 
    • Development and implementation of staff development in-service programs for certificated and classified employees which emphasize and encourage the use of educational technology; 
      • Develop and manage technology budget; 
      • Maintain communication and work in a collaborative manner with district administration, principals and directors to facilitate decision making and problem solving in the area of computer and technology services; 
      • Preserve information system assets and data integrity by implementing disaster recovery and back-up procedures, and information security and control structures; 
        • Prepare reports pertaining to the educational technology needs and accomplishments of the district; 
        • Meet with staff and architects regarding the design and implementation of technology in classrooms, libraries, and offices; 
        • Maintain cooperative interaction with other educational entities and appropriate community agencies; 
        • Assist in ensuring District wide compliance with various licensing and copyright requirements;
        • Direct the review and selection of educational and business operations technology hardware and software;
        • Supervise hardware maintenance, operation, installations and upgrades for installed LANs and WANs, to include network electronics such as servers, firewalls, hubs, routers, switches at sites district wide;
        • Consult with staff on future educational hardware selections to ensure maximum compatibility of new hardware with existing District technology resources and maintenance coordination;

 

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

KNOWLEDGE OF

  • Familiarity with K-12 curriculum, instructional strategies, and the relationship of technology of these areas;
  • Network design protocols and administration;
  • Budget preparation and control;
    • Principles of system analysis, network administration, and web pages;
    • Legal mandates, policies and regulations pertaining to technology;
    • Principles and practices of administration, including office and personnel management and budgetary practices.

 

ABILITY TO

  • Integrate technology into the K-12 curriculum;
  • Explain complex technical issues to non-technical staff;
  • Demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills;

  • Plan, organize and supervise the operation of district technology, including the use of technology as an instructional tool, at site and district levels;
  • Prepare and present management reports, interpret plans and specifications in a clear and concise manner;
  • Meet schedules and time lines;
  • Work independently with little direction;
  • Organize, supervise, train and evaluate the work of technology personnel;
  • Prepare and administer a budget;
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

 

EDUCATION

Possession of a Bachelor of Arts or higher degree from an accredited institution, including emphasis in computer science, communications, educational technology, business management, or a closely related educational field.

 

EXPERIENCE

  • Five years of progressively responsible experience in the operations of computer information systems, network design, telecommunication systems, maintenance, system analysis and troubleshooting of information technology hardware and software in an education setting or similar sized organization. Possesses in-depth understanding of various computer architecture, PC and Mac families.
  • Experience with repair and maintenance of computer and other technology equipment.
  • Certifications, such as MCSA (Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator), CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate), preferred.
  • Classroom Experience, preferred.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must possess a valid California Vehicle Operator’s license;
  • Insurability by the District’s liability insurance carrier;

The physical requirements indicated below are examples of the physical aspects that this position classification must perform in carrying out the essential job functions.

 

Physical Demands: Sit, look downward, reach, (up to frequently); stand, walk, bend, stoop, squat, push, pull, foot controls (occasionally); climb stairs, twist (infrequently); repetitive hand activities within close reach, such as files, keyboard & handwriting (frequently); lift/ carry up to 25 pounds (occasionally), may lift/ carry equipment up to 75 pounds (infrequently); extensive reading; use seeing, hearing & speaking (including in-person, phone & public address.) 

 

Working Conditions: Office environment with multiple staff members, subject to frequent interruptions, continual deadlines and pressures connected to limited funds to meet growing needs, driving a vehicle to conduct work

EDUCATION Possession of a Bachelor of Arts/Science or higher degree from an accredited institution, including emphasis in computer science, communications, educational technology, business management, or a closely related educational field. Nuview Union School District will consider experience and/or certifications as a substitute for a Bachelor’s degree.
