Columbia University's Pre-College Programs offer high-achieving high school students the opportunity to engage in exploratory coursework at the college level, studying alongside peers from around the world. This highly selective program is open to students entering grades 9 and through the summer after their senior year.
Job Description:Reporting to the Director for Faculty and Instruction, Pre-College Programs, Instructors develop and deliver immersive non-credit courses for high-achieving high school students. They guide and supervise students when classes are in session, and write a holistic evaluation of each course participant after classes conclude.
Responsibilities
● Plan and teach a non-credit course—or, where applicable, multiple courses—for the Columbia University School of Professional Studies Summer Immersion Programs
● Courses should be engaging and challenging for high-achieving high school students from all over the world
● Course content must fulfill the expectations established by the course description and title as they appear on the program website
● In-class pedagogy should encompass multiple formats so as to accommodate various learning styles, with an emphasis on collaborative and experiential learning
● Students should be encouraged to think independently, logically, critically, and creatively
● Develop a detailed, day-by-day course syllabus to be submitted to program administration before the start of the class; syllabi should be distributed to students and reviewed on the first day of class
● Create an in-class learning environment in which all students feel comfortable and intellectually stimulated and in which participation and active learning are encouraged
● Develop, assign, and evaluate homework and in-class work that foster student learning and give you a sense of how students are doing
● Be available to help students outside of class and make students feel comfortable in seeking such assistance
● At the conclusion of the program, write a detailed, substantive, personalized evaluation letter for each student. Submit all letters electronically in Word format and in hard copy on program letterhead
● Instructors must be present and actively supervising and guiding students throughout every class meeting; class meetings must begin and end at the designated start and end times as they appear on the program website
● Ensure that no one is in the classroom (whether physical or online) other than students registered in that particular course section, designated teaching staff, and designated guest speakers (who should be listed on the course syllabus)
● Report any student absences at the beginning of each class meeting
● Give students a ten-minute break in the middle of each class meeting
● Be familiar with and abide by all pertinent University and program policies, including Protection of Minors protocols and student privacy standards; program policies are detailed in the program’s Instructor Handbook
● Be aware of and abide by all emergency and safety procedures, as they appear in the Instructor Handbook
● Promptly report any student issues to program administration; issues include behavioral problems, maturity issues, suspicion of plagiarism, students who seem to be habitually tired or distracted, who do not seem to be fitting in socially, who have language barriers, ho are coming in late or missing class on a regular basis, and who seem to have physical disabilities requiring special attention
● Promptly report any technical or facilities issues, such as problems with digital platforms or insufficient air conditioning, to program administration
● If teaching an online course, attend training sessions and modules to learn the online curricular technology being used for the virtual classroom; technologies include, but are not limited to, CourseWorks and Zoom
Minimum Qualifications
● Bachelor's degree and/or equivalent related experience required
● 0 -2 years related experience
Other Requirements
● Must either (1) hold a graduate-level degree in a pertinent field, (2) be enrolled in a pertinent graduate-level degree program and have completed at least one year of study in that program, or (3) have three years of pertinent professional experience
● Demonstration of strong content knowledge as it relates to the subject matter required
● Strong written and oral communication skills required
● Teaching experience strongly preferred
● Must undergo and pass a mandatory background check
● Complete Protection of Minors and New York State Anti-Sexual Harassment Training
● Attend mandatory Orientation for Instructional Staff

- In-Person 3 Week ($7,000 - $9,000)
- Summer A: June 29 - July 17, 2026
- Summer B: July 21 - August 7, 2026
- Online 1 Week ($2,200 - $3,000)
- Session 1: June 22 - June 26, 2026

- Online 2 Week ($3,300 - $4,200)
- Session 2: July 6 - July 17, 2026
