About the Department

The Forsyth County Department of Public Health is seeking a highly motivated candidate with experience in medical laboratory testing for a Medical Laboratory Technologist position.  The Medical Laboratory Technologist is responsible for performing a variety of routine and standardized medical laboratory tests using a variety of laboratory equipment. This position performs and records quality controls for all diagnostic testing as well as for all laboratory equipment and may provide phlebotomy services including venipuncture and finger sticks to clients being served by the Department of Public Health. 

This position assists with keeping up with the demands on the laboratory to ensure appropriate turnaround times for testing so that providers can ensure appropriate treatment regimen.

Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00a. - 5:00pm; with rotating Thursdays 8:00 am - 8:pm. Schedule will be adjusted accordingly to maintain a 40-hour work week.

Position Duties

The ideal candidate will possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities:
General theoretical knowledge of the variety of laboratory procedures applicable to areas of work;

General knowledge of the laboratory equipment, instrumentation, and terminology;

General knowledge of basic pathophysiological processes being monitored as well as how medical laboratory science is applied;

Ability to use a variety of laboratory equipment to perform a variety of procedures and to maintain quality control;

Ability to make accurate observations and written reports of test results;

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions;

Ability to instruct medical technology students and other health professionals in laboratory procedures and instrumentation;

Ability to make microscopic examinations and;

Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from a four-year college or university with a degree in medical technology, chemistry or a biological science or;

Graduation from an associate degree program of medical technology and one year of experience in the assigned area or;

Completion of a certified laboratory assistant course in medical technology or a comparable course and two years of experience in the assigned area or;

Graduation from high school or GED and four years of experience in the assigned area.

Other Qualifications

Essential duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Performs a variety of routine and less standardized laboratory test procedures within the work area such as water testing, gonorrhea cultures, VDRL and chlamydia.

Receives specimens in laboratory; places specimens on appropriate medium; incubates  cultures; examines specimens to identify microorganisms.

Maintains instrumentation and troubleshoots problems.

Performs quality control on all reagents, media, and equipment.

Serve as technical resource to other staff and clinicians.

Assist in evaluating new methods, kits, procedures and equipment.

 
Performs related work as required.
