About the Department
Position Duties
- Greets and welcomes tour groups upon arrival at the museum.
- Conducts guided tours of the Museum for groups of students and adults and highlights exhibit topics throughout the tour.
- Assists other Tour Guide staff as they expand their skills leading tours of museum guests.
- Utilizes the techniques of dialogue and inquiry to encourage students to explore the Ralph Mark Gilbert Civil Rights Museum and a variety of related historical topics and events.
- Assists in the development of educational programs and conducts special activities for students, adults, and families.
- Studies selected readings and accompanies other docents on guided tours to gain knowledge and skills in leading groups.
- Participates in the evaluation of the groups and the programs.
- Exhibits enthusiasm and interest in working with students, adults, and large groups of people
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED, and post-secondary coursework in history, art, theater, education, political science, or related field; and
- At least one (1) year of experience as a museum docent or tour guide, including experience in public speaking, customer service, theater, and/or teaching, and involving speaking with large groups of adults and students on local history; or
- Any equivalent combination of experience and training.
Other Qualifications
- Must complete an Introductory Museum Training Course upon hire.
