CHILDREN'S WAITING ROOM ASSISTANT
Examination No. 26-004


San Diego Superior Court is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Children's Waiting Room Assistant. The resulting eligible list of candidates will replace the existing list and may be used to fill vacancies as they occur.

There is currently one (1) vacancy approved to be filled. This is a full-time position with benefits such as health insurance, vacation, sick leave, paid holidays, and participation in the county retirement system.

A CPR card is required within six months of appointment to the position. Incumbents may be assigned to any of the Children's Waiting Rooms in the courthouses based on the needs of the court.


JOB SUMMARY

Under general supervision, the Children's Waiting Room Assistant provides a wide range of childcare services involving general care to children, intake and release of children, and housekeeping duties.
 
Typical duties may include but are not limited to: developing, planning and supervising daily recreational and social activities; coordinating the intake and release of children; instructing children on the facility rules and procedures; interacting with the public and court staff; providing guidance to volunteers; comforting children in distress; maintaining daily written records; preparing incident and other written reports; consulting with the supervisor concerning behavior issues and the needs of the children; responding to critical incidents and emergency situations; performing housekeeping duties to ensure a neat, clean and orderly environment; reporting suspected child abuse as mandated by law; restocking supplies.
 
The IDEAL CANDIDATE should have the following:
 
KNOWLEDGE OF:
Principles and policies of state and county rules and regulations governing childcare facilities; techniques used for first aid; principles of public relations; principles of group dynamics.
 
ABILITY TO:
Supervise a group of children in a recreational and social setting; assess situations to prevent or solve problems and use sound judgment in taking appropriate action; assist and respond effectively to emotional changes in children, emergency situations, and/or critical incidents; prepare clear, concise and accurate reports; establish and maintain a rapport with children and a cooperative working relationship with staff and the public; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Routine assignments require prolonged and sustained physical effort and exertion while moving and/or relocating supplies and equipment, which could weigh up to 50 pounds. Moving activities physically involve walking, raising arms, reaching above shoulder height, stooping, carrying, pushing, pulling, lifting, stretching, and bending.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Completion of a child development certificate program* from an accredited college or university; AND at least one (1) year of recent full-time work experience in providing care to children.
OR
Associate's degree or higher in child development or behavioral science* from an accredited college or university; AND at least one (1) year of recent full-time work experience in providing care to children.
OR
At least two (2) years of recent full-time work experience in providing care to children.

*Proof of education required.
Care of one's own children is not considered qualifying experience.

EVALUATION AND SELECTION

Qualified candidates will be placed on the Children's Waiting Room Assistant eligible list based on an evaluation of information contained in the online application. Only candidates whose qualifications best meet the needs of the court will be invited to participate in selection interviews.
