Position Overview


Conduct advanced asbestos analysis of customers' samples using Polarized Light Microscopy (PLM). Support sample analysis via Phase Contrast Microscopy (PCM), and selected microbiology testing (mold/fungal). Operate with limited supervision, provide quality leadership, and mentor junior analysts.


Key Responsibilities

  • Perform bulk asbestos analysis by PLM with dispersion staining and visual estimation/point counting per applicable SOPs.
  • Perform PCM air fiber counts and support TEM workflows as trained.
  • Execute selected microbiology analyses (mold/fungal spore ID; basic bacterial testing) per SOPs.
  • Maintain QC checks, control charts, blanks, spikes, and duplicates.
  • Record observations and results in the LIMS; produce clear, defensible reports.
  • Maintain complete bench records that meet audit requirements (ISO 17025/NVLAP/EPA/NIOSH as applicable).
  • Maintain and calibrate PLM/PCM microscopes and accessories; schedule and document PM.
  • Assist with method validations, updates to SOPs, and uncertainty/MDL studies.
  • Follow all safety procedures, PPE, and chemical hygiene rules; maintain a clean bench and sample traceability.
  • Assist in training and mentoring staff and new hires;

Compensation:
This is an entry-level role, compensated at $23.00- $27.00 per hour, paid biweekly, with opportunities for overtime.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s in Geology, Biology, Chemistry, and Materials Science.
  • Hands-on PLM experience for asbestos (preferred 1–2+ years); exposure to PCM and/or TEM a plus.
  • Strong microscopy technique, attention to detail, and defensible documentation skills.
  • Ability to complete required QC and safety trainings.
  • Visual acuity and manual dexterity for extended microscope work; ability to lift up to 25 lb occasionally.

Required Training

  • Completion of the McCrone Group micro-analysis course or equivalent
  • Familiarity with EPA/NIOSH/NVLAP-aligned methods and ISO 17025 practices.
