About the Department
Position Duties
- Supervises and directs subordinates in the maintenance of County parks and grounds
- Maintains time and attendance reports
- Coordinates park activities and schedules, including park construction project schedule
- Inspects park grounds and reserved picnic areas on a daily basis and assures facilities are ready for scheduled activities
- Maintains appearance of trees, shrubs and turf by performing a variety of tasks such as mowing, trimming and edging
- Operates various types of gas-powered and electric equipment
- Performs preventive maintenance and minor repairs on a variety of grounds care equipment
- Prepares the ground for the planting and propagation trees, shrubs and turf
- Provides verbal and written reports to the Section Chief on work performed, park activities, vandalism, accidents and break-ins
- Performs plumbing, electrical and carpentry work
- Performs related duties as required
Minimum Qualifications
- Graduation from High School or General Education Development (GED) certificate, and four (4) years experience in park maintenance including planting, mowing, trimming and edging and grounds maintenance work including electrical, plumbing, carpentry and masonry; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Knowledge of parks and grounds maintenance activities and procedures; knowledge of proper methods of planting, cultivating, fertilizing, trimming and otherwise caring for common varieties of grass, plants, trees and shrubs; knowledge of various gardening, trimming and cutting tools and equipment; knowledge of equipment maintenance and repairs; knowledge of safety standards and practices; knowledge of landscaping work
- Skill in operating hand and electric tools; skill in operating gas operated gardening, landscaping and construction equipment; skill in performing plumbing, electrical and carpentry work; skill in performing basic mathematical calculations; skill in operating a personal computer, typewriter and basic office equipment
- Ability to plan and direct maintenance projects; ability to read and follow instructions in implementing projects; ability to accurately enter data and file information; ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; ability to work independently; ability to establish and maintain effective, professional working relationships with co-workers, other County employees and the general public
- Must have a valid Texas driver's license
- Must secure and maintain a favorable background investigation and clearance
- Must clear a pre-employment physical and a pre-employment drug screen test
- May work weekends and perform shift work
- Required to be on-call 24-hours a day
- May be required to work more than 40 hours during the workweek
- Constantly working in indoor conditions
- Occasionally working in outdoor conditions; visiting parks, sites of proposed parks, undeveloped land and flood control areas to assess conditions and natural resources
- Occasionally moves items weighing up to 50 pounds
- Occasionally moves about the office
- Frequently communicates with others; must be able to exchange accurate information
- Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery
- Positions self to perform essential functions
- Must be able to remain in a stationary position
