POSITION: Dance Wardrobe Supervisor and Associate Costume Shop Manager
DEPARTMENT: School of Dance
REPORTS TO: Dance Production Manager
WORK SCHEDULE: On Campus
PRIMARY FUNCTION:
The Dance Wardrobe Supervisor and Associate Costume Shop Manager supports the daily operations of the costume shop within the university's School of Dance. This role is essential in facilitating the construction, maintenance, and organization of costumes for various dance productions.
The Dance Wardrobe Supervisor and Associate Costume Shop Manager collaborates closely with faculty, staff, and students, providing guidance and supervision in costume-related activities. Some evening and weekend hours are required, aligned with the production schedule. This position also entails supervising wardrobe operations for all dance productions, ensuring seamless costume management from rehearsals through final performances.
This is an IATSE union position and will require membership, which can be obtained through Point Park University.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree in Costume Construction, Theatre Production, or a related field or commensurate experience
- Minimum of two years' experience in costume construction and wardrobe supervision, preferably in a dance or theatre setting.
- Proficiency in hand sewing, machine sewing, and the use of overlock (serger) machines.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a creative environment.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Familiarity with costume maintenance and care practices.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Essential:
- Act as wardrobe supervisor for all School of Dance performances, including the care and maintenance of dance costumes during and after productions. (30%)
- Assist in the construction, alteration, and repair of costumes for departmental dance productions. (20%)
- Participate in fittings, rehearsals, and performances to address costume needs and adjustments. (20%)
- Train and mentor student dressers, including those with limited or no prior experience. (10%)
- Attend production and departmental meetings as necessary to coordinate costume needs and timelines. (10%)
- Other duties as assigned (10%)
Non Essential:
- Ensure dressing rooms and backstage areas are organized and equipped for efficient costume changes. (50%)
- Assist in maintaining an organized inventory of costumes, accessories, and manage the acquisition and disposal of costume pieces in accordance with departmental policies. (30%)
- Maintain inventory of shop supplies and notions and request the purchase of necessary items in a timely manner to ensure uninterrupted shop operations. (20%)
Working Environment: Occasional exposure to objectionable conditions or variations such as those found in variable weather conditions or light industrial settings.
Physical Demands: Job requires repetitively lifting light weight objects where frequent bending or stooping alternates with lighter activities; Frequent computer use at workstation, up to eight hours per day; Mobility within the office. Ability to walk, sit, stand, and climb stairs. Ability to use hands and fingers, to handle office equipment, records and files. Occasionally required to reach with arms and hands, and to stoop, kneel or crouch. Vision abilities required by this job include the ability to read and discern written errors on paper and electronic documents. Ability to talk and hear. Ability to lift up to 15 lbs.
