Job Summary:

Supervises and participates in the operation and maintenance of a complex plant with variations of wastewater treatment processes and auxiliary equipment for the processing of wastewater, sludge, and effluent; serves as the direct responsible person in charge of the wastewater plant; and performs other related duties as required.

Examples of Duties:

  • Supervises and participates in operating various equipment to regulate the flow of wastewater, air, and sludge between unit processes of the plant;

  • Supervises and participates in reading, recording, and interpreting data from meters, gauges, and other recording devices to maintain/improve plant operations;

  • Supervises and participates in the inspection of plant and mechanical equipment for malfunctions, irregularities and needed repairs;

  • Supervises and participates in lubricating, changing oil and making running repairs and adjustments to machinery and equipment;

  • Participates in the installation, overhaul and repair of facilities and equipment;

  • Supervises and participates in draining and cleaning clarifiers, digesters, chlorinating chambers and settling or aeration tanks;

  • Supervises and participates in maintaining sludge digestion systems, dewatering equipment, drying beds and pulverizers;

  • Supervises and participates in the collection of raw, partially treated and treated wastewater/sludge;

  • Supervises and participates in performing chemical and physical analyses such as pH, settleable solids, settleability, chlorine residual, dissolved oxygen, and suspended solids;

  • Interprets laboratory results and makes appropriate process adjustments;

  • Maintains accurate analytical records, data sheets and reports;

  • Supervises and participates in painting of equipment and structures;

  • Maintains station logs and prepares operational reports;

  • Participates in operations and maintenance inspections;

  • Attends training sessions and advises subordinates of safety procedures;

  • Supervises and assigns the daily activities of assigned treatment plant personnel;

  • Evaluates the job performance of subordinates, including initiating necessary disciplinary actions and preparing job performance reports;

  • Operates a skid loader, forklift, and motor vehicle to transport personnel and equipment; responds to emergency call-out work as needed;

  • May be placed on standby duty to respond to emergency service calls; and

  • Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

Training and Experience:

A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from high school; and

  • one (1) year of work experience in operating and maintaining various equipment and facilities at a wastewater treatment plant.

License Requirement:

Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator’s license (Hawaii type 3 or equivalent), and a valid State of Hawaii Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator (WWTPO) Certificate grade IV.

The minimum experience required to apply for the WWTPO Certificate may not be used again toward fulfilling the experience requirement.
