The energy trader II executes power and natural gas-trading strategies relating to the company’s generation assets by executing both physical and financial transactions covering periods from the balance of the year to the real-time market.
The energy trader II is expected to take on a leadership role while maximizing the value of company resources.
Responsibilities
- Develops and manages appropriate power and natural gas-trading offer strategies within the company’s risk limitations.
- Trades power and derivative products in a fast-paced environment in accordance with the company’s risk management policies and procedures.
- Analyzes the company’s physical and financial power, natural gas and renewable energy credit positions; supports structuring and marketing of offtake agreements with company’s assets and external counterparties; executes appropriate trading strategies related to such positions to maximize the company’s gross margin.
- Understands cost structure of company-owned generation, contractual obligations including power purchase agreements and the impact of such on the company’s trading strategies with specific ability to develop and execute profitable cross commodity trading strategies.
- Monitors regional energy markets including energy prices, transmission availability and unit availability; develops and implements strategic investments based upon such information.
- Develops external relationships with trading counterparties.
- Directs market research projects.
- Analyzes transmission positions and congestion throughout trading regions.
- Models offers for company’s merchant positions in coordination with internal stakeholders.
- Develops and executes hedging strategies surrounding the company’s asset portfolio as well as transmission strategies to maximize the company’s return on assets.
- Coordinates the use of company-owned or controlled generating plants and other resources with other staff members.
- Provides technical leadership to staff in various energy markets.
- Performs additional responsibilities as requested or assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering or business-related field.(Typically, six additional years of related, progressive work experience would be needed for candidates applying for this position who do not possess a bachelor’s degree.)
- Advanced degree preferred
- 3+ years of experience in the energy industry, which includes experience in one or more of the following: gas or electric trading-related experience including financial hedging, pipeline/transmission marketing or similar commercial experience and/or utility transmission experience, origination or pricing of power purchase agreements.
- Superior communication, analytical and problem-solving skills to forecast system loads; economic evaluation of energy production utilizing market prices for gas and electricity.

- Demonstrated ability to understand and utilize computer systems and applications as tools for analysis.
