Program Summary
SUN Community Schools is a Multnomah County initiative that aligns community partners and resources to help reduce barriers that keep students from being successful in school and in life. Within each SUN Community School, the collective efforts of the school community, youth, parents, local businesses, faith communities, libraries, school districts and community organizations create a network to offer programs and activities to uplift students’ academic engagement & social-emotional development, meaningful family engagement, and resource navigation to access available community resources.


Position Summary
Schools Uniting Neighborhoods (SUN) Community Schools are a school-based service delivery model that provides a comprehensive set of services to the school communities we serve. IRCO’s SUN Community Schools offer a variety of programs that support the students’ education and family stability. SUN SUPPORT STAFF work with the SUN Site Manager to facilitate and run programs like after school classes, parent workshops, school events, and more. Programs are in-person, located at school sites around outer N/NE/SE Portland.  


Essential Functions

  • Be able to follow all school district and IRCO safety protocols related to working with youth in school communities.
  • Treat youth and fellow staff respectfully while executing classroom management and adhering to school rules.
  • Create, develop and implement age-appropriate curriculum for youth enrichment classes, examples include art, sports, cooking, science, music, writing, etc. 
  • Record and report accurate attendance to SUN Manager.
  • Encourage and assist youth with homework.
  • Provide community-aware approach communication, outreach and engagement with students and families.
  • Communicate effectively with SUN Site Manager and parents about student’s success, concerns, or questions.
  • Support at school family nights, special events and grade promotion events, as needed.
  • Be a consistent and reliable staff member during the entire session of extended day/after school programming. Sessions run in eight-to-ten-week intervals with off weeks in-between each session.
  • Effectively communicate work availability and absences (in advance, when possible).
  • Attending all SUN staff meetings and session orientations.
  • Effectively work with individuals with a broad range of lived experiences.
  • Understand the role of “mandatory reporter” and communicate any concerns related to student safety to the SUN Manager in a timely manner.


Secondary Functions

  • An ability to develop a community-aware approach and respectful relationships with students, their families and all the community members we serve.
  • Ability to use good judgment when working with youth in a school setting.
  • Experience working in or delivering services in a school setting.
  • Actively work to disrupt illegal or unlawful treatment based on race and systematic illegal denial of fair treatment through full participation program practice and implementation.
  • Utilize bilingual skills to support a community-aware approach in communication with students, families and clients in their preferred language, when possible.
  • Willingness to complete training on child abuse reporting and classroom management skills annually.

 

Requirements

  

Education & Experience

  • Must be 18 years or older and be able to pass an extensive background check. 
  • A High School degree or equivalent is preferred. Experience in the field may be considered as equivalent.
  • Experience working directly with youth in groups of 15 or more is preferred.
  • Experience planning and implementing lesson plans, classroom management and student behavior management preferred.


Physical, Mental, & Environmental Requirements

  • School setting job, no hybrid work available
  • Positions require some analysis of problems or decision-making ability
  • Work under close supervision
  • A well protected environment with minimal hazards or obstacles
  • Stable work schedule with no fluctuations


Supervisory Responsibilities

Positions at this level are not responsible for any supervisory functions, or responsibilities, but may occasionally be asked to orient and/or train new employees or volunteers.
