Description
The Medication Technician (Med Tech) at Hilton East Assisted Living Facility is responsible for safely administering medications to residents under the supervision of a licensed nurse (RN or LPN), following prescribed orders, and ensuring proper documentation. The Med Tech also plays a key role in assisting with resident care needs, maintaining a safe environment, and promoting residents’ well-being in accordance with facility policies and New York State regulations.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Medication Administration
- Administer prescribed medications to residents as ordered, including oral, topical, and other non-invasive routes.
- Ensure medications are taken by residents according to their prescribed schedules and in compliance with the medication administration record (MAR).
- Observe residents for any potential reactions to medications and report concerns promptly to the supervising nurse or physician.
- Assist with the preparation of medication and ensure proper documentation of each dose administered.
2. Resident Care and Monitoring
- Assist residents with self-administration of medications as necessary.
- Monitor residents for side effects, adverse reactions, or changes in condition and report findings to a nurse immediately.
- Assist residents with activities of daily living (ADLs) as directed, including dressing, grooming, and mobility support.
- Ensure that each resident receives the appropriate level of care based on their individual needs and care plan.
3. Documentation and Record Keeping
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date medication records for each resident, including the MAR.
- Document and report any changes in the resident’s condition, adverse effects, or medication-related issues.
- Ensure compliance with state regulations regarding medication administration and storage.
- Participate in the inventory control of medications and supplies, including ensuring proper storage and disposal.
4. Medication Storage and Management
- Follow proper procedures for the safe storage and handling of medications to prevent misuse, theft, or spoilage.
- Monitor medication expiration dates and assist in the return or disposal of expired medications according to facility policies.
- Ensure all medication administration areas are clean and properly organized.
5. Collaboration and Communication
- Work closely with RNs, LPNs, and other healthcare team members to provide coordinated care for residents.
- Communicate with residents and their families regarding medication-related concerns, side effects, or changes in the medication regimen.
- Alert the nursing staff about any discrepancies or errors related to medication administration.
6. Safety and Compliance
- Follow all local, state, and federal regulations regarding the administration of medications and resident care.
- Adhere to infection control protocols and facility policies to ensure resident safety.
- Assist in the development and updating of care plans in collaboration with the healthcare team.
7. Training and Education
- Participate in in-service training and continuing education to remain compliant with state and facility requirements for Med Techs.
- Stay informed on best practices for medication administration and assisted living care.
Requirements
Education
- High school diploma or GED required.
Experience
- Prior experience in a healthcare setting, particularly in an assisted living or long-term care facility, preferred.
- Experience administering medications in a regulated setting is a plus.
- Familiarity with medications commonly used in assisted living care (e.g., oral, topical, and over-the-counter medications) is preferred.
Skills and Competencies
- Knowledge of New York State regulations regarding medication administration in assisted living facilities.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy, particularly in medication administration and documentation.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Compassionate, patient, and professional demeanor when interacting with residents and their families.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift, move, or reposition patients as required (with assistance if needed).
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, and perform tasks involving physical activity for extended periods.
- Manual dexterity and the ability to handle medication packaging and administration equipment.
Work Conditions
- Full-time and part-time positions available with flexible shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Work environment includes residential living spaces, medical rooms, and common areas in the facility.
- Potential exposure to residents with varying medical conditions, including those with contagious illnesses.
