About the position We are seeking a detail-oriented Hazardous Materials Shipping Clerk to join our team part-time and ensure that all samples are packaged, documented and shipped in strict accordance with applicable regulations. The Hazardous Materials Shipping Clerk will be responsible for preparing, labeling, and documenting shipments containing hazardous materials in compliance with DOT, IATA, and IMDG regulations. The role requires accuracy, attention to detail and a commitment to workplace safety.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and package hazardous materials shipments in compliance with DOT, IATA, and IMDG requirements
- Accurately complete shipping documentation, including bills of lading, hazardous materials declarations and labels/placards
- Maintain shipping records and compliance logs
- Inspect outgoing shipments to ensure proper packaging and regulatory compliance
- Coordinate with carriers, freight forwarders and internal departments to schedule shipments
- Keep up to date with changes to hazardous mate
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED required; additional training in hazardous materials handling preferred
- Minimum 1–2 years of experience in shipping, receiving or logistics (hazmat experience strongly preferred)
- Current DOT/IATA/IMDG hazardous materials certification or willingness to obtain within 1 month of hire
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Basic computer proficiency (shipping software, MS Office)
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and stand for extended periods
- Commitment to safety and regulatory compliance
- General understanding of accounting principles
- Excellent customer service skills as contacting vendors and others within other departments will be required.
- Strong attention to detail
- Experience in relevant accounting roles is highly desired
Preferred Skills
- Familiarity with SAP, Oracle or similar ERP systems
- Experience in a chemical manufacturing or distribution environment
