GENERAL SUMMARY
Medical Technologists perform laboratory test procedures. The test procedures are performed with acceptable accuracy and precision within an acceptable time frame. The procedures are performed following established departmental policies and procedures
GIBSON AREA HOSPITAL & HEALTH SERVICES MISSION STATEMENT
To provide personalized, professional healthcare services to the residents of the Communities we serve.
PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Provides laboratory services appropriate for the age of the patient, including neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
2. Performs laboratory test procedures in all laboratory departments including hematology, coagulation, chemistry, microbiology, serology, urinalysis, and blood bank.
3. Performs quality control procedures and maintains adequate quality control records.
4. Performs instrument preventive maintenance procedures and performance checks in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions and laboratory policy.
5. Assists Director of Laboratory Services with performance improvement studies and special projects when requested.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
1. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
2. Physical strength to perform the following lifting demands:
• Floor to waist – 40 pounds
• 14” to waist – 50 pounds
• Waist to shoulder – 30 pounds
• Shoulder to overhead – 10 pounds
• Carry 30 pounds for 30 feet
3. May be required to lift, push, pull, or carry equipment, supplies, etc.
4. Must be able to move intermittently, walking, standing, and bending, throughout
an 8-10 hour day.

2. Emotional – Ability to cope with mental and emotional stress associated with fast paced physical activity, demands of patients and their families, and maintaining an effective working relationship with peers, physicians, and other health care workers.
3. Verbal – Ability to speak, read, and write the English language in an understandable manner. Ability to understand the meaning of words and ideasassociated with them.
4. Motor Coordination – Ability to coordinate eyes and hands to fingers rapidly and accurately in making precise movements with speed; to skillfully manage multiple pieces of equipment, tubs, tourniquets, and needles.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIP
Reports to Director of Laboratory Services & Senior Medical Technologist.
Qualifications
EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
1. A Bachelor of Science Degree in Medical Technology, Biology, Chemistry, or Microbiology, or military training is required.
2. ASCP, AMT, or CLS certification preferred.
3. Mathematical, computer, reasoning, and language skills at the college level are required.
INFECTION EXPOSURE RISK LEVEL
Category I – Maximal Risk - This job usually involves contact with patient or patient specimens. Exposure to blood, body fluids and tissue is possible. The Hepatitis B vaccine shall be made available.
WORKING CONDITIONS
1. Works in a well-lighted, well-ventilated area.
2. Must sit, stand, bend, lift, and move intermittently during working hours.
3. Is subject to frequent interruptions that cause distraction and stress.
4. Is subject to hazardous working conditions that include working with potentially infectious blood and body fluids, hazardous chemicals, and infectious waste.
5. At times, must work beyond normal working hours, and weekends, and holidays as necessary.
