POSITION SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Executive Director and in harmony with the Christian nature and purpose of the established policies and goals of the YMCA, the Preschool Director is responsible for the administration, execution, and management of the licensed preschool program site as well as for the health, safety, and well-being of all children and activities at the YMCA of Portsmouth. The Preschool Director will be directly responsible for the administration and program management of the Preschool Program. The YMCA's mission is the highest priority and its goals for these children and their families are of the utmost importance.  The Preschool Director maintains a supportive, positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals, promotes the potential of all youth, and provides a quality experience to both youth and their families.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Manages the preschool child care program, including meeting fiscal objectives; creating and scheduling activities or events; supervising site staff, and maintaining program records or files.
  2. Assists with recruiting, hiring, onboarding and training of program staff and volunteers.
  3. Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with staff, parents and caregivers, and community organizations (e.g., state child care licensing agency) to maximize program impact and drive overall outcomes; maintains regular, clear, and concise communication within areas of responsibility. 
  4. Provides support in administrative paperwork of participant files, staff lesson plans, program evaluations.
  5. Establish goals & objectives, and policies, for the program and staff that are consistent with those of the YMCA and State Licensing requirements.
  6. Coordinates staff schedules to ensure proper staff-to-child ratios are maintained during all hours of operation
  7. Ensures that all site staff provide sight and sound supervision, as well as programmed activities.
  8. With staff, schedule and implement special events for parents/families and staff to get together throughout the year. Help develop relationships between families in the programs.
  9. Follows all standards, policies and procedures as established by the YMCA of South Hampton Roads, including Employee Code of Conduct, Child Abuse Reporting and Prevention, emergency procedures and state licensing standards where applicable; makes ADA accommodations where appropriate; maintains the program site, equipment, YMCA COVID-19 sanitation and standards, and required program records.
  10. Nurtures children through purposeful programming; plans activities that are intended to achieve program goals and outcomes, are culturally relevant, are developmentally appropriate, and are consistent with the Y’s values.
  11. Creates a positive rapport and shared interest with all youth and adults; models relationship-building skills in all interactions.
  12. Provides opportunities for youth to lead, problem-solve, and make decisions and choices within the program and provides daily opportunities for youth to reflect on and respond to their experiences.
  13. Attends meetings and training as required.
  14. Assists in the purchase, inventory and delivery of all program-related supplies.
  15. Commitment to inclusion and compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
  16. Performs all other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS: 

The Youth Development Director will meet the qualifications set forth by the YMCA of South Hampton Roads and the Virginia Department of Education, Division of Child Care Health and Safety. Minimum qualifications include: 

  • Meet the minimum qualifications for “Program Director” as defined by the VA Department of Social Services Division of Licensing, which include:
  1. Staff shall be in good character and reputation
  2. Capable of carrying out assigned responsibilities; capable of accepting training and supervision; capable of communicating with emergency personnel; and capable of communicating effectively both orally and in writing as applicable to the job responsibility.
  3. Meets a minimum age of 21 years or older
  4. A minimum of 48 credit hours from a college or university of which 12 credit hours are in child-related courses, plus 1 year of programmatic experience. 
  5. At least 21 years or older
  6. 1 to 2 years supervisory experience
  • Proficient computer skills with ability to learn new software programs Current CPR/First Aid/O2/MAT certified preferred or must receive within 60 days of hire. 


WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Will be required to walk, stand, kneel, stoop, push, and lift up to 50 pounds
  • While performing duties the employee may occasionally work in the outside weather conditions, and is exposed to wet, cold and /or humid conditions
  • Continuous operations requiring attention to detail and multi-tasking
  • Will be exposed to cleaning supplies
  • Must be able to stand or sit for long periods of time
  • Must be physically able to successfully complete required certifications
  • During peak program seasons, may be expected to work night and weekend hours to meet program needs

BACKGROUND CHECKS:

An offer of employment is contingent upon receipt of satisfactory results to meet minimum requirements of the position. They may include criminal background and reference checks, E-Verify, drug test, driver’s license record, and/or a Child Protective Services Check (CPS).Additional driver’s license check, CPS, criminal background check, alcohol, and/or drug testing may be required to be processed in the future in order to meet and/or maintain the requirements of this position.


ACCOUNTABILITY:

Accountable for completion of assigned goals as measured by the number of people served, cause driven measures, service satisfaction scores, operating results, and supervisor evaluation of assigned duties. Continuation of employment is contingent upon receipt of satisfactory results to meet minimum requirements for the position. They may include a background check, drug test, driver’s license record, CPS, and/or Criminal Background check
