Your Role
The Premier Accounts Underwriting team serves group health care for national and public sector companies with over 3,000 employees and all labor and trust groups. Partnering with our national (large) accounts sales organization, we work with California's and the nation's largest and most sophisticated employers and benefits consultants
The Group Underwriter Large, Senior will report to the underwriting manager. In this role you will be part of an underwriting team responsible for balancing operating income and membership goals while protecting the company’s bottom line from loss.
Responsibilities
Your Work
In this role, you will:
Apply appropriate actuarial factors and rating methods to determine potential exposure to Blue Shield’s products
Collect, review and assess customer specific data including financial condition, employee demographics and past claim experience to determine degree of risk, appropriate benefits and rates
Review requests for quotes, develops and reviews bid specifications, benefit plan design features and financial alternatives for complex, fully insured cases as well as alternative funding arrangements (e.g., ASO, minimum premium, etc.)
Participate in discussions and negotiates with sales representatives on new and renewal business. May be included in discussions with brokers, consultants and employers
Review and approve rates in sales requests and updates financial and tracking databases
Provide underwriting knowledge sharing, education, advice and coaching to other underwriters and departments
- Prepare ad hoc statistical reports
Qualifications
Your Knowledge and Experience
Requires a bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
Requires at least 5 years of prior relevant experience
Requires strong knowledge of medical underwriting principles, practices and techniques
Requires ability to solve complex problems with sometimes ambiguous information
Requires comprehensive knowledge of medical products including their financial drivers and funding arrangements including fully insured, ASO, minimum premium and refund accounting
Requires excellent negotiation and customer service skills
Requires ability to perform as a team member and collaborate with other teams/depts
- Preferred: Experience working for a national insurance carrier working on larger national accounts

Two Ways of Working:
- Hybrid (Default): Work from a business unit-approved office at least two (2) times per month (for roles below Director-level) or once per week (for Director-level roles and above). Exceptions:
o Member-facing and approved out-of-state roles remain remote.
o Employees living more than 50 miles from their assigned offices are expected to work with their managers on a plan for periodic office visits.

- On-Site: Work from a business unit-approved office an average of four (4) or more days a week.
