About the Department

The HVAC Lead Technician performs skilled, mechanical, and maintenance duties in the inspection, repair, installation, and alteration of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems and related equipment and facilities. Perform preventive maintenance and routine servicing of equipment with little or no supervision. The incumbent will be responsible for monitoring the day-to-day work, inspection of installation and repairs on HVAC equipment, monitors repair logs, and supply usage of the HVAC Technician II and Technician I. This position requires Arizona State Type III Certification in HVAC.

Position Duties

  1. May serve as a lead to staff to include prioritize and assign work, assist with performance evaluations, ensure staff is trained and follow policies and procedures, maintain a healthy and safe working environment and make disciplinary recommendations to management.
  2. Ensure compliance with state and county safety codes for the inspection, repair, installation HVAC equipment including refrigeration and air conditioning compressors, receivers, condensers, chillers, water cooling towers, forced air converter units, pumps, automatic and hand valves, expansion valves and capillary tubes.
  3. Develop and monitor the regular preventive maintenance inspections of refrigeration units, isolated heating and ventilating units, electrically operated air conditioning equipment, and make necessary adjustments or repairs; service and repair evaporative coolers.
  4. Troubleshoot HVAC systems and diagnose problems with equipment.
  5. Read blue prints, schematics, and use energy management software for the installation or modification of HVAC systems.
  6. Repair or replace defective parts in units and equipment and their controls, including thermostats, automatic switches, fan controls, log switches, damper motors, louvers, relays, filters, controls, belts, compressors, heat exchangers, high limit controls, pressure controls, safety valves, and automatic gas valves.
  7. Operate a variety of hand and power tools, welder torch, vacuum pump, test equipment utilized in the trade and a motor vehicle; maintain equipment in effective and safe working condition; maintain parts and tool inventory.
  8. Perform skilled electrical maintenance work in the repair, installation and alteration of HVAC equipment, components, timers, motors and wiring systems as needed; connect motors to control panels.
  9. Lubricate and pack heating, ventilation, refrigeration, and air-conditioning motors, pumps, fans, and other equipment.
  10. Install and calibrate systems; install copper tubing and repair pipes and tubing as necessary; test joints, and insulate pipes of refrigeration and air conditioning systems; descale tubing; rebuild pressure and temperature safety valves and water pumps.
  11. Install, rebuild, replace, or repair fans, motors, thermostats, fuses, filters, bearings, valves, controls, gaskets and other equipment as necessary.
  12. Maintain related records concerning time, labor, and materials; maintain log of tasks performed and write reports as required.
  13. Perform other duties of a similar nature or level as requested by supervisor or director.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of:

  • Standard practice of the HVAC and refrigeration trade;
  • Theory of HVAC and refrigeration systems;
  • Materials, methods and tools used in the operation and repair of HVAC and
  • refrigeration systems;
  • Applicable building codes, ordinances and regulations of State and local authorities
  • pertaining to HVAC, refrigeration;
  • Air compressors and pneumatic controls;
  • Cooling tower and boiler water treatment;
  • Manual and electrical tools and equipment applicable to the HVAC and refrigeration;
  • Welding and soldering techniques;
  • Health and safety regulations;
  • Basic record-keeping techniques;
  • Proper methods of storing equipment, materials and supplies;
  • Yaqui culture, customs, resources and traditions and/or a willingness to learn.

Skills and Abilities:
  • Perform skilled mechanical maintenance duties in the inspection, repair, installation and alteration of District heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration systems and related equipment and facilities;
  • Calibrate systems;
  • Perform preventive maintenance and routine servicing of equipment;
  • Diagnose defects, and install, repair and maintain heating, ventilating, refrigeration and air-conditioning units;
  • Operate specialized machinery, equipment and tools utilized in the repair, installation and maintenance of heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration systems;
  • Work independently with little direction;
  • Meet schedules and time lines;
  • Maintain routine records and prepare reports;
  • Operate a variety of office equipment, including a computer and related software applications;
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with co-workers, supervisor, management, Council members, and the public. Have ability to sufficiently exchange or convey information and receive verbal and written work instructions.

Other Qualifications

High School Diploma or G.E.D. Certificate plus four (4) years of documentable HVAC Journeyman level operation, maintenance, and repair experience; and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

AND
  • Bilingual English/Spanish is preferred;
  • Experience in mentoring HVAC; apprentice level employee is preferred;
  • Experience with trenchers, cement mixers, forklifts or other heavy equipment used in HVAC installation is preferred.
Special Requirements:
  • State of Arizona Type III Certification required; 
  • Universal CFC License is required within six (6) months of the date of hire; 
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona Driver's License; 
  • This position will require the incumbent to work non-traditional hours, nights, and weekends; 
  • Must have a current Level 1 Arizona Clearance Card, Tribal Gaming License, and Homeland Security Background Check or be able to obtain one within ninety (90) days of hire. Failure to maintain a current Level 1 Clearance Card will result in termination.
