About the Department

****Applicants seeking short-term or part-time work with the University of Hawai’i may apply for Casual Hire positions, which include administrative professional and technical (APT) or Instructional-type positions.  Because of the temporary nature of these appointments, Casual Hire employees are not eligible for most benefits as provided to regular BOR and Civil Service employees such as paid leave and holidays.  Casual Hire appointments may last for up to 89 days for full-time employees and up to one calendar year for part-time employees.

Description of Duties:

  • Instruct adult learners in Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) safe driving skills in preparation for taking the State of Hawaii’s Commercial Driving License (CDL) exam.
  • Teach classes to prepare students for the air brake, pre-trip inspection, basic parking control skills and road test in preparation for the State of Hawaii CDL licensing test.
  • Assist students with the “CMV Theory Based Curriculum” online class.
  • Conduct remedial driver training.
  • Manage cleanliness and maintenance schedule of the training truck.
  • Must clear Department of Transportation drug test as a condition of employment.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Provide evidence of successful completion of a commercial driver training program.
  2. Current State of Hawaii’s Commercial Driver’s License class or higher class representative of the subject matter that will be taught.
  3. Licensed to drive manual non-synchromesh transmission CDL vehicles.
  4. CMV driving experience within the previous two years in a vehicle representative of the type of CMV that is the subject to be taught.
  5. Experience within the previous two years in teaching the operation of the type of CMV that is the subject to be taught.
  6. Meets all State requirements for a vocational instructor.
  7. Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing software.
  8. Current Hawaii Department of Transportation Medical Certification.


Desired Qualifications:

  1. Two or more years of experience teaching CMV safe driving skills in preparation for the CDL exam in the class representative of the subject matter that will be taught.
  2. Experience with CMV driving simulators.
  3. Two or more years of commercial driving experience representative of the subject matter that will be taught.
  4. Experience with various types of computer programs such as word processing and excel.
