Status: Part-time 

Hours: 7am-4:30pm, Sunday-Friday  

Reports to: Events & Retail Manager 

About Coastal Roots Farm: 

Coastal Roots Farm (CRF) is a nonprofit Jewish community farm and education center. We cultivate healthy, connected communities by integrating sustainable agriculture, food justice, and ancient Jewish wisdom.  

We share organic produce with those who need it most and connect people to compelling Jewish ideas and traditions through farming and food. We distribute food through our on-site pay-what-you-can Farm Stand, pop up mobile farm stands, and donations to hunger relief organizations. We offer hands-on education and experiences through School and Group Visits, Farm Camp Farm Tours, Volunteer Opportunities, Jewish Agricultural Festivals, and other community events, inviting our neighbors to connect to the land, Jewish tradition, and each other. Most recently, we opened a Coffee Cart and Garden store that will be open to the public Sunday through Friday.  

Coastal Roots Farm is located in Encinitas, CA on approximately 17 acres of land which we recognize as indigenous to the Kumeyaay and Luiseño peoples. Our Farm consists of vegetable production fields, education farm and gardens, a food forest, chickens, and compost operations. Coastal Roots Farm was incubated by the Leichtag Foundation in 2014 and received 501(c)(3) public charity status in 2015. 

Position Overview: 

The Barista & Retail Associate will operate the coffee cart and facilitate sales from the Farm & Garden Store at Coastal Roots Farm during this exciting period of growth. 

The ideal candidate is knowledgeable in coffee-making, has retail experience, is capable of working by themselves, has strong interpersonal skills and welcoming disposition, thrives in a fast-paced environment, and has an attention to detail. This position requires someone that enjoys physical work.  

As we move through the year, the coffee cart hours will be extended with the goal of being open Sunday-Friday, and the Barista & Retail Associate will have the opportunity for more hours. Additionally, during the peak summer season, the Barista & Retail Associate may be eligible for extended hours to support Events Department programs and events including Farm Film and Music Series, Farm-to-Table Dinners, and other community events.  

Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

Physical Duties: 

• Set up and close down of equipment including coffee machinery, trash, retail products, furniture, and other necessary items used during the day. 
• Preparing and serving beverages such as drip coffee, espresso-based drinks, tea and other specialty drinks 
• Facilitating the proper organization and cleanliness of store and cart spaces. 
• Answering customer questions about the farm and directing to other farm programs  
• Inspecting inventory to ensure proper food safety and retail product storage 
• Cleaning and returning equipment to proper storage space. 
• Cleaning, maintaining, and pest control of surrounding spaces 

Administrative Duties: 

• Provide high levels of customer service. 
• Conduct inventory or store product 
• Provide daily reports to Events and Retail Manager 
• Utilize Square for point of sale, data entry, and other relevant financial exchanges for taking payment at events. 
• Evaluating and modifying processes to improve efficiency and quality of service 

Additional Responsibilities: 

• Upholding and enforcing any safety precautions necessitated by working in an outdoor environment 
• Other duties as assigned. 

Qualifications and Experience 

The ideal candidate will have: 

• Barista and retail experience 
• High School Diploma or GED required. 
• High level of attention to detail. 
• Strong organizational skills. 
• A positive attitude and strong interpersonal skills. 
• Strong verbal and written communication. 
• Excellent critical thinking abilities. 
• Performing well under pressure. 
• Ability to multitask. 

Compensation  

$20 per hour to commensurate with experience.

Typical Working Conditions  

The Barista & Retail Associate will work mostly outdoors.  There will be exposure to Southern California outside temperatures, chemicals used in the agricultural industry, and loud noises.

Continuous walking, standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, lifting, reaching, and pushing/pulling up to 50 lbs., cutting, and carrying.  Able to walk minimum of .5 miles on uneven narrow trails with elevation gain.
