The position of custodian requires specific knowledge and abilities.
Must pass the physical exam, including drug screen.
Ability to lift up to sixty (60) pounds safely.
High school diploma or equivalent.
Ability to work effectively with a positive attitude with the custodial staff in their assigned building.
Ability to read and follow written and verbal directions.
Ability to communicate effectively with varying levels of the community, including, but not limited to, co-workers, building administrators, students, parents, and outside contractors.
Ability to seek clarification, gather information, and make independent decisions when necessary.
Knowledge of proper cleaning methods, safe use of tools, and general care practices of a school facility.
Willing to learn the location of valves, critical shut-off points, and shut-down procedures for utilities in case of breakdowns or emergencies.
Ability and willingness to be flexible, accept additional or other tasks, and perform them as assigned by the building administrator and/or Director of Facilities.
REPORTS TO: The custodian position within the Ypsilanti Community Schools works in conjunction with a head custodian and reports to the building administrator and Director of Facilities. He/she is responsible for the general maintenance of an assigned area within a school building. However, assignments are subject to change, and custodians are expected to accept direction from a building administrator, the Director of Facilities, and accept information as it flows through the secretary of the building as well as any Head Custodian assigned to the building.
JOB GOAL is to provide students and staff with a safe, attractive, comfortable, clean, and efficient place in which to work, learn, play, and develop.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES: The custodian position is assigned a regular daily schedule and is expected to arrive on time, ready for work, and punch in and out on the time clock at the beginning and end of their work day. The custodian position is expected to adhere to his/her regular schedule on a daily basis unless formally notified by the Director of Facilities. The custodian position will be assigned a specific area or areas to maintain but may be asked, on occasions, to accept or perform custodial duties in different areas of a building.
Their work and responsibilities will include but are not limited to the following:
Clean assigned rooms, offices, entryways, restrooms, and specialized areas (i.e., auditorium, locker room, gym, kitchen, or clinics, etc.) on a daily basis using appropriate tools and supplies properly.
Clean windows on entryways, doors, and showcases on a regular basis and clean other fixtures (i.e. showcases, doors, kitchen equipment, podiums, etc.) on an as-needed basis (may be daily) to ensure clean and acceptable conditions for all building occupants.
Clean restrooms (including scrubbing and disinfecting toilets, wash basins, and fixtures) properly using appropriate chemicals and tools on a daily basis. Fill toilet paper supply, hand towel supply, and soap supply as needed.
Sweeps hallways and entrances every evening and cleans hard floors on schedule with chemicals and floor machines.
Mops floors in assigned areas, including entryways, cafeterias, lavatories, hallways, and offices, to remove any mud, water, salt, or slush tracked into the building or to clean up spills or accidents.
Clean, wash, and/or dust any horizontal surface as assigned in the area as scheduled, including shelving, desks (adult or student), window sills, counters, and other furniture as requested.
Maintain any custodial equipment (vacuums, floor machines, buffers, mops, dispenser units, etc.) in a condition so that they will continue to work and provide longevity. Discontinue use and report any malfunctioning equipment to the Head Custodian in the building and the Director of Facilities for repair.
Secure the building after all daily activities have ended or secure all entrance ways except for those necessary to allow for special event traffic while the building is open to the public.
Custodian positions assigned to an evening shift where he/she is the last person in the building are expected to secure the building by checking that all exterior entryways and windows are secure and locked and by setting the security alarm properly.
In heavy winter weather conditions during the winter months, the custodial position may be asked to assist with snow removal from all walks including entrances and public sidewalks - proper snow removal equipment will be provided.
Report any vandalism to the Head Custodian and building administrator.
Report any maintenance needs or repairs to the Head Custodian and Director of Facilities.
Compile a weekly order list including needed supplies and submit to the Head Custodian on a timely basis.
Work as a team with the Head Custodian and District Maintenance Department to ensure the success of delivery of services to the District.
15. Perform additional duties which are required by the building administrator / Director of Facilities which relate to maintenance, cleanliness, and custodial care of the building and the support of the Custodial and Maintenance Departments.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Fifty-two weeks per year.
