About the Department

Hennepin County Library (HCL) is seeking a Lead Tutor to support youth and families in a new school embedded Let’s Read pilot at Anishinabe Academy. The Lead Tutor will provide direct literacy support to K-5 students during the school day in small group or one-on-one setting. The Lead Tutor is responsible for providing literacy focused academic support to students through a mix of push in and pullout supports to meet the needs of Anishinabe Academy and increase student’s literacy skills. The Lead Tutor will also support Homework Help at East Lake Library providing a warm welcome to the library for Anishinabe students. 

***Pay starts at $23.00/ hour

Location and hours:

This position will be located at both:

  • Anishinabe Academy at 3100 East 28th Street, Minneapolis MN 55406.

  • East Lake Library at 2727 E Lake Street, Minneapolis, MN 55406. 

The Lead Tutor will work 20 hours per week. The schedule will include Wednesday evenings at East Lake Library from 4 p.m. - 8 p.m. and a regular 4-day schedule during the school day at Anishinabe Academy.  The specific schedule will be dependent on Anishinabe Academy’s needs during Minneapolis Public Schools school year and Summer Programming.

New Employee Orientation (NEO) for all new benefit-earning employees is in-person in downtown Minneapolis. Details about NEO will be provided upon hire. 

About this position type: 
This is a limited duration (temporary) part time, benefit earning position expected to last up to two years, with the possibility of extension.
This position is internally classified as an Office Specialist III.

In this position, you will: 
  • Provide direct literacy support to K-5 students during the school day in small group or one-on-one setting. 
  • Support Homework Help at East Lake Library.
  • Establish and communicate program routines and norms with students, teachers, and families.  
  • Support Hennepin County Library and Anishinabe Academy community engagement and outreach for Anishinabe Academy and Hennepin County Library afterschool academic support programs. 
  • Collect and report program data such as monthly attendance, participant surveys, and family engagement activities.  
  • Become familiar with and promote library resources for supporting student academic success to students, families, and volunteers. 
  • Participate in required meetings and training sessions for Hennepin County Libraries and Minneapolis Public Schools-Anishinabe Academy.
Need to have:
  • One of the following:
    • Two years or more of office clerical experience.
    • 18 months or more of office clerical experience and completion of the Office Specialist Pathway Training program.
    • One year of office clerical experience and completion of the Human Services Pathway Training Program.
    • An approved combination of post high school education and office clerical experience to equal at least two years.
Nice to have:   
  • Experience: 
    • Leading a youth program or working with youth in a volunteer setting.
    • Tutoring youth in literacy. 
    • Working with Hennepin County programs, i.e. volunteering. 
  • Deep knowledge of and connection with the Indigenous community in Minneapolis.
  • Ability to work with multiple audiences, including children, families, volunteers, and staff members with cultural backgrounds other than your own.
  • Familiarity with best practices in tutoring and academic skill building.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Basic computer skills, including the ability to navigate online systems and email.
