About the Department

This position is for Recreation Leader – Senior Programs, a full time Civil Service position in the Metro Parks and Recreation department. This position will be responsible for performing a variety of tasks to assist in the coordination, development, and implementation of programs, services, and resources for senior patrons 50 years and over in the Community Recreation Division.  Performs other related work as required.

Metro’s Parks and Recreation Department offers a variety of facilities and programs throughout Davidson County. Currently, the department oversees nearly 16,000 acres of open space, including 184 parks and 107 miles of greenway. Metro Parks offers after school programs for children, activities for seniors (55+), cultural arts classes, dog parks, fitness classes, nature programs, sports leagues, ice hockey, art galleries, and much more.  It is the mission of Metro Parks and Recreation to sustainably and equitably provide everyone in Davidson County with an inviting network of parks and greenways that offer health, wellness and quality of life through recreation, conservation and community.

Position Duties

  • Assists in the development and implementation of programs for senior patrons in a community center. 
  • Plans excursions and extended trips; monitors and schedules transportation for excursions and trips.
  • Collaborates with community agencies and organizations to provide additional programs and services for seniors. 
  • Supervises senior patrons and maintains order and discipline.
  • Provides feedback to the Program Coordinator regarding program development.
  • Observes necessary precautions to ensure the safety of senior participants and spectators.
  • Attends mandatory in-service training and senior program leader meetings.
  • Transports senior groups to various outings both educational and recreational. 
  • Submits a current seasonal/monthly schedule of all senior activities and special events to Program Coordinator.
  • Works cooperatively, in partnership with meal services. 
  • Opens, closes, secures, and maintains an appointed facility.
  • Performs light housekeeping duties to ensure high standards of facility cleanliness are met. This could include preparing spaces for different activities, setting up tables and chairs, picking up litter, emptying trash receptacles, and restocking restrooms.
  • Meets and greets patrons and answers questions they may have about the facility.
  • Maintains records and prepares reports.
  • Administers first-aid in the case of minor injuries.
  • Enforces all rules and regulations established for operation of the center.
  • Performs other related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

High School Diploma or equivalent and one (1) year experience in social/recreational programming and services to the elderly

 

 

LICENSES REQUIRED: 
Valid Driver License 

 
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Applicants for this classification must be physically able to participate in recreational activities involving walking, running, swimming, bending, stooping, etc.


**This position requires a pre-appointment drug test and is subject to random testing**

NOTE: Per Metro Ordinance No. SO94-1078. All employees of the Metropolitan Government shall be residents of the State of Tennessee or become residents of the state within six (6) months of employment as a prerequisite to employment with Metropolitan Government.

Other Qualifications

  • Experience planning excursions and extended trips; monitoring and scheduling transportation
  • Skilled in analyzing senior community needs and adopting programs to meet those needs
