About the Department

POLICE DEPARTMENT 

Under general supervision, the purpose of the position is to perform safety and security Police work involving non-suspect crime detection, prevention and investigation.  Employee functions at entry staff level to perform law enforcement duties and is responsible for protecting the lives and property of all citizens.  Specific assignments are received from a superior Officer, however, employee must react with independent judgment and initiative in dealing with routine and emergency situations.

Position Duties

Patrols assigned area. Responds to and assists service calls not requiring an armed response; answers citizen complaints and/or general inquiries.

Provides assistance to stranded motorists.

Investigates basic crime scenes and accidents; searches for and preserves evidence; prepares depositions; testifies and presents evidence in court.

Enforces vehicle parking and operating laws; issues and explains citations for violations.

Directs traffic and assists pedestrians at intersections; escorts parades.

Promotes crime prevention through public awareness efforts; solicits cooperation of citizens to report crime and illegal activity.

Prepares various daily and periodic written reports and departmental forms; maintains logs; completes forms; prepares violation reports.

Assists with natural disaster preparedness and emergency response; directs evacuation traffic.

Attends training sessions and seminars as directed.

 
ADDITIONAL POSITION FUNCTIONS  
 
Performs related duties as directed when such duties are a logical and appropriate assignment to the position.
 

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED; a demonstrated ability to perform the physical and interactive requirements of the job; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
 
Current and valid Florida Driver's License.
 
Employee shall obtain the National Incident Management System ICS-100 Introduction to the Incident Command System and IS-700 National Incident Management System, An Introduction within six (6) months of employment. These courses are designed to provide a baseline, as they introduce basic NIMS and ICS concepts and provide the foundation for higher level Emergency Operations Center (EOC), MACS, and ICS related training.
 

Other Qualifications

Knowledge of local, state and federal laws and current ordinances, departmental policies and procedures, and standard operating procedures.

Knowledge of the City's judicial system, and operations and procedures for criminal prosecution.

Knowledge of physical characteristics of the City's territory; cultural diversity of the people living and working within the City's boundaries.

Knowledge of record keeping, report preparation, filing methods and records management techniques.

Knowledge of business English, e.g., spelling, grammar, punctuation, and vocabulary.

Intermediate level mathematical skills, including percentages and decimals.

Skill in both written and oral communications.

Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions, giving close attention to detail and accuracy.

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operation and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

Ability to interpret a variety of instructions in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.

Ability to foster a team environment by supporting cohesive work relationships and providing effective conflict resolution.

 
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
 
While performing the essential functions of this job the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
 
While performing duties of a Community Service Officer, tasks may involve the intermittent performance of physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of reaching, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, running, climbing, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of extremely heavy objects (50+ pounds). Some tasks are performed with potential for intermittent exposure to disagreeable elements including, but not limited to, heat, humidity, inclement weather, loud noise, toxic/chemical agents, electrical currents, pathogens, traffic and animals. Tasks include working around moving parts, vehicles, equipment.
