About the Role:
The Surgical Coordinator plays a critical role in ensuring the seamless planning and execution of orthopedic surgical procedures within a healthcare setting. This position serves as the central point of communication between surgeons, patients, medical staff, and external vendors to coordinate all aspects of surgical care. The Surgical Coordinator is responsible for scheduling surgeries, managing pre-operative preparations, and facilitating post-operative follow-ups to optimize patient outcomes. By maintaining detailed records and ensuring compliance with healthcare regulations, this role supports both clinical efficiency and patient safety. Ultimately, the Surgical Coordinator contributes to the overall success of the orthopedic surgical team by streamlining processes and enhancing patient experience throughout the surgical journey.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent; Associate’s degree or higher in healthcare administration or related field preferred.
- Minimum of 2 years experience in a healthcare setting, preferably in surgical coordination or orthopedic support roles.
- Strong knowledge of orthopedic surgical procedures and terminology.
- Proficiency with electronic medical records (EMR) systems and scheduling software.
- Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Certification as a Surgical Coordinator or Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA).
- Experience working specifically within orthopedic surgery departments or clinics.
- Familiarity with insurance billing and authorization processes related to surgical care.
- Knowledge of healthcare regulatory requirements including HIPAA compliance.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced clinical environment.
Responsibilities:
- Coordinate and schedule orthopedic surgical procedures in collaboration with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and operating room staff.
- Communicate effectively with patients to provide pre-operative instructions, answer questions, and ensure readiness for surgery.
- Manage surgical documentation, including consent forms, medical records, and insurance authorizations to ensure compliance with healthcare policies.
- Liaise with medical suppliers and equipment vendors to ensure availability of necessary surgical instruments and implants.
- Monitor and track surgical schedules, making adjustments as needed to accommodate emergencies or changes in patient status.
- Facilitate post-operative follow-up appointments and coordinate with rehabilitation services as required.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of surgical cases and patient outcomes for reporting and quality assurance purposes.
