Reason position exists 

The Lead Youth Worker’s basic duties include the day-to-day care and supervision of the youth within a Shelter and the direct supervision of staff. The Lead Youth Worker acts as a role model for the other Youth Workers in the Shelter. A Lead Youth Worker’s responsibilities are met through involvement with a Shelter Team and work with Case Manager on case plans. In conjunction with the Program Manager, the Lead Youth Worker is responsible for the maintenance of an optimum climate for group participation and productivity.  

 

Duties and Responsibilities include the following: 

 

1.Coordinates the day-to-day care and supervision of the youth within a Shelter

  • Create a climate that encourages the growth of staff and residents by facilitating the implementation of treatment plans and adhering to the structure of the shelter.
  • Provide an effective model of problemsolving by encouraging participation, honesty in feedback, candid discussions, and fair resolution of conflict with peers and residents.
  • Ensure that all group modules are being conducted.
  • Coordinate the inventory, purchasing and recording of clothing for all residents.
  • Ensure that the initial clothing allotment is obtained and receipts are given to the bookkeeper for proper reimbursement.
  • Coordinate the assessment and recording of the residents' behavior for administration of assessments.
  • Individual must be flexible relative to work schedule and provide on-call coverage as assigned by the Program Manager.
  • Occasional travel may be necessary.
  • Maintain regular attendance according to agency needs/policy.
  • At all times, dress in a manner that is functional, clean and appropriate.

 

2. Provides supervision of Youth Workers 

  1. May create and monitor staff schedules in order to ensure well balanced and efficient coverage.
  2. Assist in recruiting, training and evaluation of Shelter staff.
  3. Know and use the special skills and experience of other staff in order to enhance the team functioning
  4. Coordinate shelter activities with other agencies, staff and Program Manager.
  5. Supervise, review and maintain the daily log.
  6. Request and monitor the utilization of funds and the appropriateness of activities.
  7. Assist in planning, coordinating and implementing shelter programming by assuming delegated assignments.
  8. Represent the shelter in liaison with school, in conjunction with the Program Manager.
  9. Coordinate with support services and assist in the identification of maintenance needs, repair of those needs, and overall monitoring of the shelter physical environment, including safety drills.

Qualifications: 

  • Age 21
  • Meet the Minnesota Department of Corrections rule 2960 standards for Group Residential Programs and all other applicable agency standards.
  • Possess a minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent and 3 years of related experience working with youth and demonstrating a progressive increase in responsibilities.
  • Preferred qualifications include prior supervisory experience, demonstration of cultural competency and bilingual skills. 
  • Valid driver’s license
  • This position must be recommended by the Shelter’s Program Manager and approved by the Senior Manager of Shelters and Foster Care.
  • YIPA Certification (The Art and Science of Youth Work) preferred. Required upon hire.
