The Role

This newly created position supports the continued growth of Canopius in Australia and New Zealand. The successful candidate will be responsible for producing and underwriting risks aligned with the defined class of business on behalf of the syndicate, in accordance with the approved business plan and within personal authority limits. This is an exciting time for an experienced underwriter in Australia looking for the autonomy to challenge themselves to build on the sound foundation that has already been created. The opportunity will suit an individual who thrives on being part of an entrepreneurial and dynamic environment. They will have the ability to operate autonomously and collaboratively, forming meaningful relationships with multiple internal customers and external stakeholders.

This role will offer decisive insight and opinion and drive the future development of the underwriting philosophy and strategy for the engineering lines (+renewable energy), with a focus highly on Construction risks (CEAR) and Renewable energy risks (EAR/OAR). As a market-facing role, the candidate will actively represent and promote the Canopius brand and philosophy within relevant markets. The successful candidate will be based in either Sydney or Melbourne.

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities 

  • Underwrite and evaluate new and renewal business across Engineering lines, with a focus on Construction and Renewable Energy
  • Assist in developing the Engineering portfolio and proposition in Australia & New Zealand as per the Global/Regional Construction and Energy SBF Management Plan
  • Assess and underwrite renewal and new business in a timely and efficient manner in line with the business plan and personal authority limits
  • Develop and maintain relationships with brokers, cedants, and clients
  • Ensure compliance with internal underwriting guidelines, regulatory requirements, and risk appetite.
  • Analyze terms, specifications, and ratings on prospective and existing business
  • Compile underwriting reports and performance statistics to monitor portfolio health.
  • Report monthly premium income and contribute to internal performance reviews
  • Represent Canopius in the market, promoting our brand and underwriting philosophy
  • Provide mentorship and on-the-job training to assistant underwriters as needed.
     


 

Qualifications

Skills and experience:

  • Extensive underwriting experience in Construction and Renewable Energy lines within the insurance industry
  • Results-driven with the ability to make decisions and work on your own initiative
  • Highly motivated with a solution mindset and client-focused with excellent relationship management, customer service, interpersonal, organization, and negotiation skills
  • Active involvement and market player in the APAC region are essential
  • ACII or equivalent professional insurance qualification is preferred
  • Engineering degree or technical background is preferred 
  • Strong IT literacy, numeracy, and analytical capabilities to support data-driven underwriting decisions.
