JOB TITLE: Reading Specialist/Interventionist (0.5 FTE)
LOCATION: Elementary Schools
REPORTS TO: Principal/Assistant Principal, Curriculum Director

 

GENERAL OVERVIEW

The Reading Specialist/Interventionist provides targeted reading instruction to small groups of students identified as at risk. This role involves working closely with the Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment Department, school administrators, teachers, and families to support student learning and ensure academic success.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university (Master’s preferred)
  • Valid Massachusetts teaching license with reading specialty endorsement
  • Minimum of five years of classroom teaching experience
  • Strong knowledge of reading instruction, curriculum, and assessment practices
  • Demonstrated ability to design and implement interventions using research-based methods
  • Effective classroom management and student support skills
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

KEY RESPONSIBLITIES

 

Instruction & Intervention

  • Assess students across the school to identify those at risk in reading
  • Design and deliver targeted, research-based reading interventions
  • Differentiate instruction based on assessment data and student needs
  • Document interventions, monitor progress, and adjust instruction accordingly
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers to align instruction and support student growth

Data & Communication

  • Collect, analyze, and interpret student performance data to guide instruction
  • Communicate progress and strategies with teachers, administrators, and parents
  • Provide feedback and strategies to help students improve reading skills and study habits

Professional Practice

  • Develop lesson plans consistent with district curriculum requirements
  • Integrate technology to enhance instruction and student engagement
  • Serve as a positive role model and uphold the mission of the school district
  • Maintain professional relationships with students, staff, families, and the community
  • Participate in professional development to enhance instructional skills
  • Assist in selecting books, materials, and instructional resources

School & Student Support

  • Create a supportive, inclusive, and developmentally appropriate learning environment
  • Manage student behavior consistent with district policies and the student handbook
  • Take necessary precautions to ensure student and staff safety
  • Attend faculty meetings, serve on committees, and contribute to school initiatives

COMPENSATION

Placement on the teachers’ contract salary schedule based on experience. Prorated for 0.5 FTE.
