Job Description

Senior Scientist - Hazardous Tree Management

The Vegetation Management Section seeks to hire an experienced environmental professional with advanced technical expertise in hazardous tree management. The ideal candidate thrives in team-working environments, demonstrates strong written and verbal communication skills, and exercises sound professional judgement.

This position plans, develops, and executes moderately complex scientific projects supporting District-wide hazard mitigation and infrastructure maintenance & hardening, with primary responsibility for the tree management program. Duties include working with field station staff to create and implement annual tree management plans, preparing work orders and reports, documenting activities, developing statements of work, and assisting other District departments with mechanical vegetation management.

This position reports to the South Florida Water Management District’s main headquarters in West Palm Beach, FL. Alternate work locations may be considered. Field work will involve day travel throughout the District’s 16 county jurisdiction.

Key Responsibilities
  • Coordinate vegetation management with all District field stations.
  • Oversee contracts for complex tree removal projects in District waterways and rights-of-way.
  • Serve in emergency management as Debris Removal Officer: Lead role in planning, coordinating, and training EOC Debris Teams, track debris management projects, and prepare FEMA reimbursement documentation.
  • Collaborate with the District’s EOC and local, state, and federal agencies during emergencies.
  • Supervise the Tree Management Strike Team

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in hazardous tree trimming and removal
  • ISA Certified Arborist
  • Experience directing contract workers conducting complex tree operations
  • Experience in contract administration and project management
  • Experience supervising team members 
  • Familiarity with South Florida tree species
  • Proficiency using spreadsheet and word processing software
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to present technical information to a wide range of audiences

Education/Experience Guidelines
Master's Degree in Natural or Physical Sciences and 6+ years’ experience that demonstrates measurable career progression within scientific discipline that can be applied to support the District's strategic goals and objectives.  An equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate. The salary range for this position is $76,564.80 - $83,761.60 (based on education and years of relevant work experience).

Licenses
Valid State of Florida Driver’s License.  Possession or ability to acquire within 180 days State of Florida pesticide applicators license in the Right of Way category.

Physical Requirements/Working Environment
The work environment is a combination of field work (40%) and office work (60%), with regular exposure to a hot and humid environment in remote and heavy vegetative areas, with exposure to stinging/biting insects, snakes, and alligators.  May be required to lift up to 60 lbs.


Additional physical requirements include agility, balancing, basic water skills and ability to swim, driving vehicles, kneeling, moving/transporting equipment, walking through rough terrain, working in, on, or near water.

Due to the District’s response role and in the total scope of emergency management, this position will be required to provide support before, during and after major storm events and emergency situations, such as hurricanes or other declared emergencies.  This position is a member of the Emergency Debris Operations Team.
